Cloudsky said:Its kinda cool, I mean these guys earn tons of cash, they can afford to bash up guitars for the sake of enhancing a performance. It addes some variety to the show(e.g hendrix lighting up his guitar and pete townshend smashing his telecaster into the amp, etc). Makes the audience wanna go wild too! artyman:
Maybe to a few artistes, it's not so much as to make the audience go wild or to hype up the stage, but more like their own extension of self-expression. I'm sure there's deeper meaning to Jimi Hendrix when set his guitar on fire...(or maybe he's really just being high but who knows?) He actually wrote some poem thingy on his guitar before the gig as if he already knows the fate of his guitar..see here
I think it's a different case for shooting Mtvs...they probably get cheap second hand axes or ones that are condemned (?) to do a shot of the scene. Only during lives will the artistes probably really smash up their working axes...but even then, not many will do it lah...since they've been using their beloved guitars in recordings, concerts, etc for such a long time...
I do know of a few artistes (eg. Michael Schenker) who got their smashed guitars repaired for future uses (but poor techie)
