I have a guitar,i need a paint job

That isn't just simple air brushing if I'm not wrong, its nitrocelluse finish... I don't think you can get just anyone here in Singapore to do it. The tech has to know his stuff to get a smooth even coat.

how much to strip and paint at the novelty bookshop? hahaha

somehow when i see this reply, it cracks me up infinitely

I think he'll hire you for free, but that'll steer the bookshop into quite a niche market hur hur

just to share with u all. i did it before on my copy strat guitar. from a sunburst finish, i sand it down to bare and then repainted it white... its not that easy as it seems but for diy enthusiast like me, its like a challenge. u can check out some tutorial from the net. but make sure u are committed to it. if u are thinking of sanding it down, make sure u have a sander machine instead of hand sanding as it will cut the time needed to strip the body of the old paint. u can get a sander machine from diy shop with brand like black & decker. u will also need a sanding sealer, clear lacquer, spray lacquer(colour). and lots of sandpaper. its a tiring job but very rewarding especially when u managed to strip off the old paint for the first time and see the bare wood... :D well... thats just my 2 cents..

There are also chemical paint stripper. What I read was, some are so strong it literally strips the paint out in 1 piece...

Bro SpaTanS, what type of paint did you use? Btw, the photo look a little classic leh...XD

Hey Dfury ... just normal spray paint that u can find in supermarkets or bookstores ... think it's a Nippon brand or something ... just rem to sand the surface smooth b4 u spray

ooh, the photo was taken back in the 80s ... yeah, been a long time kid ...

if u dont sand it, and just paint over it.. its also possible.. but by then, your guitar body would be thick of paint.. some say it makes the guitar resonate lesser.. this is wat i did in terms of steps...

1 - sand down the body of the guitar using sandpaper(60-80 grit). sanding machine is recommended.

2- after the body is sanded down and u can see the complete wood, sand it again using a higher grit like 240-360 to make it smooth...

3 - now hang the guitar using a bendable wire hanger, and spray the guitar with sanding sealer, etc..

4 - spray a 1st coat of paint on it. not too thick, then wait maybe 2-3 days for it to really dry.

5 - check the body. if any wood grain risesand effect the finished paint of the body, sand it down again using 1200-2000 grit sandpaper.

6 - spray paint the body again. repeat if necessary. maybe 3-4 coating depend on personal preferences.

7 - Finish the body off using clear coat lacquer or satin clear lacquer.

8 - the end.

this is approximately the steps that i've done... but then again im no expert on this. its just that i am a bit handy with tools and as fate would have it, i am in the electronic/electrical/technical line of work. this is just my experience... was a tiring and tedious project, only recommended if u have the time and patience. be prepared to sacrifice some time if u going to do this but it was worth it to me to see the end job.. i found the steps and tutorial from the net.. cant recall the website.. i just got a strat guitar body recently. its sunburst also.. im also thinking of stripping it and doing it again.. maybe paint it cherry sunburst or red... at least this is what im thinking... maybe i will take some pics and write a step by step tutorial.... what u guys think??? :?:

it doesnt work on polyurethane finishes like those on my rg550... zoero to little effect.. but if u really want, then u really gotta be prepared to slog to get it off.. its not that easy even with a sander, its very time consuming.. so be prepared to really slog... and the horns of the guitar have to be sanded down by hand... so yeah.. go consider..

if there's a chip at the guitar, will a paint job cover it up?the wood's not chipped, its the paint and finish.

if there's a chip, when u sand it down, just use a lil wood filler to fill it up to get it even, then sand it down to make it smooth..
then after that u can paint it over already..

have done paint jobs b4 ... I can tell U...it's not easy from the stripping to the sanding to the finishing, rub outs...theres so much more needed .... If u dun mind DIY for expirience then ok but....be prepare for "Non Factory" results...

I'm wt Shredcow on the natural finish / tone theory - my personal cutom axe will be all natural 2pc swamp ash with gloss finish...

juz any paint will do?can spray paint do the job?i thought diff paints will affect the tonality of the guitar cuz when the wood absorbs diff kind of paint it'll produce diff sound?

erm.. light coats only.. dont go all heavy with it.. just many light coats.. and i'd advise spraying a protective coat over the bare wood before u start spraying..
