How would u describe Indie music

Because i ve seen the genre "indie" thrown about everywhere in singapore, I wanna know what exactly is indie music, without band descriptions.
Eg: techno = loud bass and the boom-chick-boom-chick beat
screamo = well, screaming

what would Indie be then?

there is no such thing as indie rock.
it's actually short for independent.
meant for bands that are signed to independent record labels, like matador.
nowadays more and more "indie" bands are popping up.
the original indie artistes' music have a particular sound and when bands that like the sound start to play that kind of rock, it's labelled "indie", though they are signed to major record labels...
well too bad ppl are too lazy to differentiate the sounds so they say indie indie indie. too overused.

yes thats EXACTLY the point. Just take a look at the musicians wanted section, and see the amount of people looking for Indie musicians, or forming indie bands.. thats why im honestly confused whether indie is still that label status or whether it has morphed (like power rangers) into a proper genre

people like to relate "INDIE" with the oldies, from 70s period. Like The Beatles, John Lennon. Mordern day "INDIE" band, like arctic monkeys, razorlight, the strokes, etc..

Indie is on a rise

indie is a gimmick. it's a tool used by the music industry giants to attract unsuspecting teenagers to gimmicky music, ie. music that relies on quirky tired gimmicks and a twist on the olde tried and true song formulas. Upon embracing this so-called 'indie' subculture, these people are then called indie hipsters, or scenesters, and sometimes, colloquially as 'indie fags'. They are starting to represent a sizeable demographic, and therefore the music industry is starting to warm up to them.

Sometimes a good indie band pops out every once in a while, but these are very few and far between.

There are a few meanings to the term indie. The first is independent, like zeebra said. At that point of time, there were quite a number of indie bands. Early nirvana was one, so was blur, stone roses, the inspiral carpets and suede. It eventually got broken up into 2 main types. The grunge, pre grunge of the pixies, nirvana, breeders, dinosaur jr etc. american version of the indie pendent bands and the british version of indie, stone roses, charlatans, ned's atomic dustbin etc. Though shoegazer bands were indie, they were mostly just referred to as shoegazer --- mbv, ride, curve, jesus and mary chain. Then the british bunch became known as brit pop as most of the shoegazer bunch died out and the american bunch became grunge even though guys like soundgarden aren't exactly grunge. The term indie pretty much died out.

But in singapore, now, most of the time, indie bands usually refer to the brit version of indie. But with the advent of easy electronics, bands which have the electronic and indie sound are known as indietronica. Since most bands in britain now fall under either a version of brit rock/pop, punk, shoegazer, it's very seldom anyone refers to bands as indie anymore in any other place except here, or trying to reference that old school british indie sound of the 90s.

wow... now they have indietronica?! this is getting weirder and weirder man.. IMO, indie = independent.. nothing more, nothing less..

artic monkeys, the strokes etc. can fall under britrock, britpop etc. and it's getting bloody irritating to see kids nowadays wearing their "indie" outfit(anything that can make them look like friggin Beatles, and it's a shame coz i like the beatles.) and start talking in a BAD British accent.. goodness..... :?

it's a substitute for lack of musicianship and technicality

I think the indie generally is

- jangly, fruity guitars
- innocent, clean lyrics
- abit of the 60s/70s pop vibe
- simple appearances and no pretentions

it's very avant-garde, and it probably just came along with the culture of the people who liked the idea of doing things themselves.

as for "lack of musicianship and technicality", i'd direct you to my two favourite local indie bands.

MySpace.com - Postbox - SG - Indie / Alternative / Rock - www.myspace.com/postboxband
MySpace.com - The Fire Fight *NEW VIDEOS UP!!! - Indie - www.myspace.com/thefirefightsg

they both have some pretty damn awesome musicians.

the two bands are good, with well crafted songs, and that's as far as it goes, just like dozens other "indie bands" i've heard before. the songs are easy listening at first but after a track or two it gets boring, hardly anything "avant-garde". indie is merely a commercial status, not a kind of sound. to be avant-garde is to be ahead of our time, the police and U2 were considered avant-garde coz they did bring about a completely new sound, and sadly also the excessive use of delay that alot of "indie bands" that followed took advantage of. mars volta is way ahead of our time, in my opinion, and they're not indie.

The 'Indie' music we came to know today is definitely not innocent and clean. *cough*PeteDoherty*cough*. Definitely not avant-garde either, because they don't sound ahead of their time, unlike Pink Floyd, or NIN.

Pink Floyd was just a bunch of musicians who took too much LSD and couldn't really play the blues. So they used shitloads of delay on their tunes. Tell me that 'Run Like Hell' wasn't proto-U2 and I'll smack yo' face. But I <3 Pink Floyd! Live in Pompeii was/ is the sex!

Nine Inch Nails was inherently an amalgam of Ministry (and many harsher sounding industrial acts) and David Bowie/ Depeche Mode (the pop artistes). He made sounding angsty very sexy with such couplets: "Head like a hole/ Black as your soul/ I'd rather die/ Than to give you control" Wah piang eh, how not to relate to this when you were going to school everyday when you were 12 - 18...

The real indie muthafuckas are those guys who started it all. The cottonpickers at the turn of the previous century: the old blues musicians. The devil's bluesman, Robert Johnson is the ultimate indie musician...

Robert Johnson is indie! INSANE!!! Then like that Hendrix BB King Buddy Guy Albert C SRV Clapton J.Morrision are all indie! That means Im Indie Too! Insane!Insane!

i listen to indie as much as i listen to the radio. i.e, i don't listen to them at all.

where do these indie bands keep popping out from? how come they suddenly have an interest in making the same type of music? weird.

Nah, not referring to songs like Head Like a Hole or Closer, more like The Big Come Down, All That Could Have Been and similar stuff like that. It's the kind of stuff you know was made donkey years ago but it doesn't sound/look outdated. Kinda like the font Helvetica.
