How to Prevent Rusting

just got myself a 2nd hand epi lp... just wanna ask if anyone has other suggestions besides leaving it in the hardcase with silica gel and wiping off after playing it..

i left my bass in the soft bag for a few months and it turned out quite rusty... the metallic parts at the pickups, screws, tuning pegs all oxidised or rusted =(

left it in cupboard with thirsy hippo.. worked out quite ok but after a while again get even more rusty..

Wash your hands and make sure they are dry before you play to prevent the strings for rusting.. Given the air humidity in Singapore, it is normal for your guitar to rust if you leave it without wiping, so a way out is to clean it REGULARLY regardless whether you play it or not, and it worked for me!

If your house is really humid, try a lot of sillica gel packs. I use quite a lot of them in my bags just incase and oxidation of metellic parts has so far been minimised..

I used to use thirsty hippo but i think that is an over kill. Too expensive and not practical. Be sure to wipe and clean your equipment before storage because dust traps water vapour and will accelerate the rusting process.

Just leave it. You're already doing the best to prevent rusting but you can't avoid it totally.

There's one other way to prevent rusting to your hardware apart from the stings. Spray a thin coat of lacquer on it after polishing the initial rust off and the finish will seal the hardware forming a barrier against water vapour.

hm..wondering how sillica gel looks like?...er..where to buy it?..any specific brand which is gd?...how much ar?
cheers..

hmm, my practice will be clean the string after use, put some silica gel in the hard case.. and lastly put the cloth over the string and guitar, cover almost all especially strings....... and close the hardcase and snap it.. hehe it works for me...

what type of cloth??izzit the cloth to wipe car one or wat??

That would be excellent...the one with the micro-fiber.Why i say that is because Fender sell these cloth by Meguiar (an ultimate product in car care)...

means u literally tear open the packet of silica gel and throw it around the hardcase or do u just place the packet of silica gel in the hardcase?

what i normally do is wipe the guitar with a smooth dry cloth, put into hardcase den put it into the cupboard. Really helps.

if you are rich get the hardcase that can control the temperature in the hardcase or something like that.

Eh a lot of people say go to camera shops and get those cobalt dunno what thing that turns blue/pink when its dry/wet etc.

Well bein the lazy guy I am, I just g\buy those tao kae noi or similar seaweed snacks, makan finnish and then reuse those white packets that reads: "DO NOT EAT".

Yup =) those are crystaline silica gel. Do remember to microwave them cause even though they're solid, they might be saturated with water molecules already. Microwaving them makes thoe water evapourates. They'l' still look and feel the same (maybe a lil bit hotter) after microwaving but they would be ready to absorb water again...

I tried that eons ago when I was into photography... Guess what? It doesn't work. Because, after you microwave it, and it's dry, it's also warm. Once it cools down (rather quickly), it absorbs very fast. (the time is eg. from your microwave to your guitar)

Maybe times have changed, and the item has been improved. (was more than 15 years ago when I did this...) Hope so...
