How to make strings rust slower

use fastfret. thats the best invention i've ever used on my guitar strings man. the string wont rust even if its out of the case, in whatever room. just wipe the string with the cloth after playing, and then rub the fastfret on the strings. works wonders.

I use fast fret too, makes it feel extremely smooth. But note one thing, there chemicals in fast fret that may cause damage to the wood of your fretboard. Use it at your own risk.

Personally i find DR Extra life and elixir strings long lasting.. BUT

After a while they wear down your tone alittle. This is my experience with them la..

Now im using D'arddio nickel wound strings. The pack that goes for $15 with 3 sets of strings.. Yea

Those are really great stuff. IMO.

Dunlops arent bad too.

making strings rust slower's just a matter of taking care of the strings la, do the norm of wiping off and using string cleaners and stuff. also to keep them nice and smoooooooooooth you can use the liquid coatings. makes them feel like elixirs for awhile. ha ha.

personally i love elixirs on acoustics to death, but on electrics, coated strongs darken the tone just that little bit. not so pleasing to the ears sometimes.

there are alot of methods la, personally i don't reccomand fast fret as the chemicals can harm your guitar for life.

as you can see RUST needs moisture and SALT to cause rust. if you take 1 of them out, rust will not appear. but knowing this, AIR contains a percentage of moisture and salt in it, therefore it will still rust no matter what but at least at a slower rate.

so you can always put your guitar in a case with thirsty hippos in it and poof, not much moisture can touch your strings

or you could always WIPE with a clean towel, in my case i use a 3M towel that is used for car wiping, just wipe off your sweat that contains water and salt. therefore it will not rust so that quickly.

Have any of you tried Stringlife yet? While it's pretty pricey at $20, I find it far more effective than FastFret. It doesn't grease up your strings and I had cases where it made my RUSTY strings SMOOTH!

where do you get it from? I only have fast fret and dunlop 65

Rust occurs when there is moisture and oxygen. So if you figure out a way to reduce either one of these, your strings can last pretty long.

Nope.

Rust is basically oxidisation of metal which happens when oxygen interacts with metal to form oxides. In most metal like copper, silver and brass, oxidised compund creates a rather fine film that serves that can actually slow down the oxidisation of the metal underneath. That's why a tarnished copper, silver or brassware can be polished.

Iron on the other hand oxidises into a flaky compund that doesn't protect the metal beneath it, so when iron/steel rust you can pretty much say goodbye to it.

Salt aka Sodium Chloride in itself is a very stable compound that cannot be changed or change other elements or compounds by chemical means. The old believe that iron rust faster in salt water applies more so to sea water.. because sea water has more than just salt, water and oxygen (and plenty of oxygen because of the marine floras) in it!

Bro THOA, u have hit the nail on the head. Seawater contains a lot of other compounds which aren't so stable, hence they give up their oxide ions to the more reactive iron speeding up rusting. Sec 4 chem stuff lolz.

Fastfret didn't work for me, but Dunlop 65 did. It does tend to 'dry out' ur fretboard a little however, so use sparingly. I think best to go all the way, if ur concerned abt stringlife alone. Keep in case, use Thirsty Hippo and silica gel to absorb water, wipe down strings b4 and after playing, apply string conditioner ( i refuse to call them string cleaner, they dun clean the strings if u know wat i mean ) and u shld get a set of strings that last for 1-2 years? My current set has a 2 mth old coat of Dunlop 65 on it and it hasn't rusted yet. The set is abt 1 year old. I applied it after playing, abt 3 times a wk, b4 'O's. Its a dull colour now, but still smooth and still plays well. It depends on wat strings u use too, i use DR Tite-Fits.

Cool tips! Always been changing strings. Been playing for 5 and half months but change strings more than 8 times(Man i really hate rust and my friend who mindlessly shreds and doesn't have the initiative to wipe after play).

Now looking for some silica gel! But can the thirsty hippo really fit into my bag?

Oh well it depends on the size of the bag ya? U can get silica gel in big packs frm photography shops. But getting the smaller packs might be a problem. Alternatively, look in shoeboxes after the new shoes have been taken out, usually there are 1-4 packets inside.

wipe down after play......

moisture from your hands is the biggest culprit. not moisture from the air. ever wondered why strings on display guitars don't rust? some string packs aren't even airtight.

some string lubes can help prevent tarnishing ('rust' is iron oxide) from happening. you might also be able to use methylated spirit to wipe down. the alcohol will displace the water.

thirsty hippo comes in packet version as well. as for me, i use a japanese brand of packet dehumidifier called DRY & DRY. available at selected NTUCs

You can find small packs of silica gel in food packets..like wang wang

Do not put your guitar in air conditioned areas. I've moved my guitar from my room to my living hall and it still hasn't rusted a bit.

When my guitar was in my air conditioned room, the strings would rust less than 2 weeks.
Ever since i moved my guitar out, it hasn't rust for more than 2 months.
