How much does the new (aug 06) SOFT website design suck?

i find it annoying how the gig listing loads before the last 10 threads, becuase i refresh a few times an hour to check on updated threads.

ah well i'll get over it. otherwise i like it.

nitrovo!!! i must start charging you!!! dont keep refreshing the front page. no wonder the bandwidth consumption is sooooo high.

ok, the reason why the "last 10 threads" loads slower than the other is because the "last 10 threads" block is originally a scrollable/expanderable block. i modify it to expand automatically. that is why it take a little longer to load.

well, if anyone can help me program something to do it better, i am most delighted.

shredcow , come come, make good use of your programming expertise.

Mr Soft, I owe the forum lessons on songwritting liao, ask me come program, i fear soft will never take off again!

James, is there RSS feeds available for each subforum?

I was thinking, if there is, people could follow topics via their RSS/Thunderbird/Outlook browser, that saves a lot of bandwidth.

On the other hand, you will get less people participating in all the forums since it becomes specialized. and RSS users will not see any advertisements (lest you somehow put them on the threads or something.

thor666, i think most people dont know about rss. as long as we do not use the website like a chat, i think it will be fine.

on my side, i am trying to reduce the file size to optimise the load.

I prefer the "Buy & Sell" Section to be separated from the usual forum topics. But I'm sure James has his reasons for merging them and instead list the calendar of events.

Ah well, I thought it would be more efficient. I like RSS anyway; so if you have an option enabled, I reckon I could come up with a tutorial for using RSS.

I did create an rss feed for the front page, but it only updates every 6 hours because it's a free service (if you pay it updates every hour). It's pretty basic, just tells you the subject of the latest post, the time and who it is by.

http://feed43.com/soft-forum-updates.xml

I create rss feeds for all my sites that don't have one. (Football 365!).

The front page now tells me how many new PMs' I have just like the old one! So I'm happy.... :D

Everything else - it is really an improvement now that we don't have a few pages of ads of people wanting to sell their gears. It is slightly cleaner now without those ads.

Oh by the way, the "new PMs" section on the front page doesn't update after the PMs are read. Mine still show "1 new message" after I've read all my messages. Just a small bug?

morning cheez

the block display how many PMs you have in your Message Box, not just the new ones.

if you delete a PM, log out, log in again. you will see the update.

i will try to create another block that shows just the ads filtered from the other posts in the forum. the ads will still be in the forum, this is to make it easier for buyers and sellers to interact.

maybe i will put this link on the front page (www.soft.com.sg) and the user can choose to see the full site or a rss feed? i am using my Nokia N80 to surf SOFT and every kb counts!

i think all's fine as long as it doesn't lag or have problems with registration.(for new softies to join in)

the colours are pleasant, the people are nice (most), the opinions are wide (unnecessary ones are locked promptly) it's all cool.

this's a free forum and as long as it's not broken, don't fix it. if someone wants a big improvement, the money's gotta talk (a.k.a the clicks on the google ads).

I just shift-clicked on all of them. accidentally clicked on the "singapore gay guide" one though, whats with that? haha..

50¢ worth

i think soft is a great place for us to hang, discuss, learn and meet new girls.. i mean people.. so its good for all of us. Besides, james have come a long way to cultivate and create this single avenue for many many aspiring musicians to share and discuss and i believe that content increased tremendously.. its not about how the site looks but i feel its about endless discussions and sharing of knowledge so we all learn and benefit from it. Navigation on the site doesnt seem to be the problem anyway you have a search thingy on the top so its all good. thanks and bubbai.

Sure, but remember it updates only every 6 hours. So if u are looking for hourly updates it's not that useful. Any also the rss feed only shows the title of the last 10 recenly updated posts, u still need to click the title and go to the site to read the actual post.

Basically that's what rss is for, just to update you of new posts so you don't need to keep checking the website itself.

I've never been to the old site before and am quite a new member here. The navigation on this site was easy and i didn't have to search where the forum, home or gallery button is. Simple and nice, the color blending is also nicely chosen not like ultimate-guitar so black, background also black. James did a good job on its outlook and navigation on the site. Fairly simple and fun loving to use :)

i think the main title must be changed la,instead of negative title you can put something like 'ways to improve bla bla' or 'new website feedback'....its nicer to hear imo
