How many of you here are self-taught

hmm, whats the difference between playing electric and acoustic? i mean, technique wise.
I dun think it's that easy to string bend on acoustic? To me, things like tapping for acoustic also harder. Lots of limitations on acoustic compared to electric.

Started with classical guitar at yamaha but just didn't know how to strum to songs for almost two years. Anyway, when i finally self taught strumming, i realised i couldn't do anything more than strumming and finger picking. So decided to take up electric guitar lessons and i can do many more things and know more variations now.

I picked up the guitar about 10 years ago (man thats a long time!) Got a few lessons on cowboy chords from some friends, and spent the last 9 years screwing around with tabs and trying to memorize songs. I would say my biggest improvement in those 9 years were learning barre chords and power chords.

In the last half a year or so, i discovered that learning some music theory and practicing scales helped a lot. I'm exploring the fretboard more, and giving light to ideas that come to me over backing tracks.

To cut a long story short, I was self taught almost all the way, but sometimes without guidance you don't know where to go. In terms of learning, I had a 9-year plateau. :(

No regrets, its an enjoyable hobby, but sometimes I just ask myself how much different (read between the lines - better) i would be if I had a teacher 9 years ago...

For those who are self-taught, do you find it better to use DVD or to use the Internet?

During my time, I had no DVD nor Internet, not even a computer. I had only a casette player, a $30 acoustic guitar, and a pair of ears, no money to hire a teacher.

I've met many great musicians who are self taught. They all have some things in common - good pair of ears, devoted, hardworking, musically sensitive, distinctive style and identity, humble and always think of himself/herself as a student. A teacher can only guide you this far, you'll have to path the rest of the journey on your own.

To answer your question, I say Internet.

90%

90% self taught. the 10% comes from me jus startin formal lessons after 4yrs of self learning...

i think thats the most wonderful thing about playing the guitar, u can easily learn it and strum along to the songs u want even without a teacher (for majority of us at least).
Thanks to the net/technology so many contemporary musicians nowsadays dun even need any formal training to play and make the music they love :)

Just makes things so amazin!

Yeah kids these days have it easy. Ehem, well that includes me.

However, most need to be taught the magic of GOOGLE AND YOUTUBE, for god's sake.

im 100% self-taught. Currently struggling with learning some music theory & other advance techniques to play lead guitar well.

same i'm also self taught ~ i'm struggling with scales i can understand scales but i just dun know how to apply them ~~ shrugs -.-

Hey guys, been a lurker in this forum, finally decided to post. I've finally ord-ed and have ample time with me, so i decided to give the guitar another go. I've been to justinguitar and that site is awesome for learning basics.

I'm getting better with chords and stuff but one thing that irks me alot is strumming.
I'm a little perfectionist and hate it when i can't find the right strumming pattern as the original. Also, sometimes the bridge and chorus might have differing strumming patterns as the main verses.

For starters, i just can't nail the strumming pattern for The Calling's Wherever you will go and James Morrison's You give me something. Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Just listen to the song over and over again. Would be better if you have good speakers/headphones for better clarity.

Actually why must copy exactly? As long as the strumming sounds ok and in rhythm, it's good IMO.
