I got my first electric from my grandfather. It was a Samick triple humbucker gold top les paul copy. It felt too heavy for me coz I was only 12 back then. I sold it to get a mid-range classical guitar.
My second electric was from my uncle. I followed him to the year end Swee Lee sale coz he said he wanted to get a Jazzmaster. After making his purchase, he told me to try out a couple of guitars. After trying a couple of guitars, I picked up a Cort M200. Really sweet guitar. Like an el-budget PRS. He told me if I wanted it. I said I had no money. Then he said 'It's orite, I'll pay for it.' Needless to say, I agreed.
Then I sold the Cort to get a Squier Tele.

ahhhh.almost forgot..my uncle gave me an old Hofner 335 style semi solid (like BB King type) electric years back -
I used too carry it around in a flimsy soft case - one day te strap broke while I was at the top of the stairs of an overhead bridge - guitar fell all the way to the bottow - broke in many places - goner ....

Um. My first electric guitar and amp were from my parents. Birthday+christmas present. I'll never ever ever ever sell it (i hope).
My AC30 was some what a gift from my dad too.
My first pedal was a birthday gift but i sold it cause sentimental value anymore when friendships end:\ Other gear were bought with my hard earned money

Never received a guitar as present ever. I used my own savings and bought my first electric guitar. I'm not so privileged to have supportive parents...

I guess I ought to count myself lucky, as long as I pay for my gear myself, my parents are okay with me playing guitar. I'm too old for them to say yes or no anyway
