hey! im thinking of getting a equalizer pedal. i only have one guitarist friend who uses it and he says its useless. can i ask if you guys always leave your equalizer pedals on throughout the song? or only use it as a boost?

well u can use it as a boost , or to cut feedback. Its very very useful in tweaking ur tone to sound tighter or fatter.

i use it to tweak my tone when recording line in.. and in gigs i use it to boost solos currently... cheers.

i use one... i feel it is realli useful.... u can either use as a boost or use to alter yr tone...

as i am using a les paul... i use the pedal to mimick the the single coil clean tone... and some time i use it to experiment with different tones with different amp....

quite useful i would say... but not a muz to hv...

fallacy: the EQ unit is a splendid level/ drive booster

it is important to note that the EQ unit serves to boost & reduce frequencies. this means you get to sculp how sharp/ nasal/ bassy (to put it loosely) your tone sounds like through the amp.

1. guitar + amp
if you believe in a minimalist approach, the EQ pedal can be used to sculp your guitar's tone in tandem with the song/ theme of your music. eg: scooped setting for a heavy, drive laden song/ more upper end crunch for solos etc.

this pedal can also be plugged into the amp via parallel connection to affect the overall tone there

2. guitar + FXs + amp
for this popular set up, the EQ can be used (placed at the end of the chain) to rectify a loss in frequency or boosting any suppressed bandwith for that matter. this happens because in the various FX pedals employed, chances are, there would be a TONE option to meddle with (& guitarists often do that) & upon doing so, the inherent guitar voicing is altered. the EQ here addresses this situation not as the ultimate tonal rectifier but as a compensator of sorts

I heard of this interesting way to use it and have been using it that way since.

Basically the EQ is on with a dip in the mids for normal rhythm work. When I want a boost, I turn off the EQ. The mids come back and that gives me the "boost" for solos.

No noise added.

Hmm.

I use my EQ pedal to provide me with that bottom end oomph out of my solid-state amp, and to clean up the signal from my humbuckers. Since my OD pedal already has an on-board 3-band EQ I use that to tweak my drive tone. I also have a volume booster for solos.

if i want to boost my clean tones?

btw do you guys uses boosts when playing intros that use delays?

and its your overdrive unit activated or off?

sorry but i just started learning how to use delay effects so i know zilch

quite easily, when employing clean tones, if you want a driveless boost, use a clean booster unit- you get more of what you currently have.

there isn't an obligation to use a booster unit with the delay in the chain.

it is also personal preference to have the drive on/ off when having the delay activated; it's a personal choice, really.

hmm there many ways that one can make full use of the eq..
IMO Subversion had provide the info that you need but there are instances that the eq is use as the first pedal after the guitar...

the idea is to boost or cut/taylor certain freq on ur pickup...( tweak the eq to get the required tone)
and i`ve seen those that utilise 2 eqs..before the drive pedal ...and also after the drive pedal.(boost/cut or alter tone)

my personal fav is a digital eq ...like the behringer deq2496...

some people even employ 3 EQ units in their chain 8O :

1. immediately after the guitar

2. at the end of the serial chain (before the signal reaches the amp)

3. parallel @ the amp

hehehe ~
:)

I'm actually searching for another eq for that config.
basically use the eq after dist for added mids -> get that fuller fatter chug
eq before dist ... to customise the cleans -> for articulate highs and low mids
Another just before the amp for added control (rack eq would be nice)

Eq's are SHIOK la ~
Especially for the super "yim zhim" :D
imo: the more the merrier

haha my delay sounds kinda messy with overdrive though.

maybe i dont know how to control.

ooh clean booster units? you have any examples?

hmm how do you guys set your amp settings if you have a eq pedal? flat frequency?

Could consider Dan electro Fish & Chips, Daphone EQ, and Beta Aivin EQ-100.
Brand doesnt really matter.

Main things to look out for when getting an eq:
1.) noise (when on) - especially if you wanna use it as a clean boost
2.) tone sucking - when the pedal is off

It's useful to have an Eq at the end of ur chain, especially when you're running many pedals (eg. more than 5).
:)

As for amp settings:
depends on what you're using ur eq for ...
