Home recording guitar

Hi

I wish to do some home recording of nylon-string(classical) guitar but I'm not sure what equipment I need. I heard that I need a mic and a mixer. Can anyone advice me on what to get? As for budget, I'm pretty strap so the most bang for buck would be ideal.

Thanks mate.

If you want, get the audio interface and then get good mics to record your guitar. Different parts of the guitar produces different sound. Research on that :)

IF on a budget I suggest just get a normal dynamic mic. Can use your HIFI system as the mic amp I think? Use Audacity (its free) as your recording/editting software.

Goes something like this: guitar -> mic -> HIFI -> PC

My idea of a budget setup might be wrong though, just suggesting.

Hello

Aocheng - what is the purpose of an audio interface? so if i get an audio interface all I need other than that is a mic? and what u mean by different parts of the guitar make different sound? I'm using a acoustic guitar, are u talking about the different sounds the guitar produce when u play near the soundhole or near the bridge etc?

wasp - I dont have a HIFI system near my pc and I would prefer to use a condenser mic because they seem to be more clearer?(correct me if i'm wrong) I would say my budget is about >300.

Thanks mates

Audio interface also acts as mic amp too, if you are looking at condenser mic be sure the audio interface also has +4.8v phantom power to power the mic. You can look at line6 audio interface which are on sale at City music now. Alternatively there are quite a number of condenser mic and mic amp on sale here in soft buy/sell section.

Do you think you are looking at doing intense recordings or just to have a recording of your playing for keeps?

If just for reference and no fuss, I suggest using something like a mp3 recorder or Zoom H2 or H4

For classical guitars, I think it is better to use condenser microphone. The thing is, these mic require phantom power, if you are getting an interface, make sure it supply the 48v.

there is a used Boss BR600 on luther's classified ads that should meet your requirements,
and its a multitrack, so it should meet your future requirements too.

Just to expand
It is all in one, has stereo condenser mics, has built in mixer, has built in recorder
and built in drum machine
the learning curve when you start off will be harder then just a normal straight recorder
but its not too difficult.

You can download the manuals of boss website to see if it suits your requirements.

If you're using a laptop, DAW as a medium to record your guitars, get a good audio interface.. I recommend Alesis I02.. It has 2 mic and line inputs.. Preamps and the Quality you get out of it is pretty good considering you've done a decent amount of tweaking on getting your tone right before you record, or you can even do that when you're mixing.. you can also invest in SAMSON C03 condenser mic.. It is a very sensitive mic and it's really good for vocals and acoustic guitars.. You can research and get reviews on those items..
Peace.
