High, Medium or Low Output Pups? Why?

beware buying older 2nd hand pick ups - power & tone usually gone...whether it's active or passive...

"I love weak pickups..... when you drive up the amp on them, your tone comes alive.." John Mayer.

Just a quote from the latest Guitar Player mag.

For those of you interested.. the Double Whammy is similiar to the Tonezone, its modern sounding, FAT and punchy.. However, its more dynamic, not so in your face all the time, and it has less (read tighter) bass.. which I absolutely love.

Dan, you seem to love whatever new pickup you have but sell in again in the following month

dude u hit the nail right on the head!

Hahaha... yeah man! :)

Reason being, I want to experience them all! :)

The pups have been making a big changes (to me) for me tone and I've just been having the itch to try EVERYTHING.

Not so much of they sound bad or what, but hell, every pup is different and its wild trying them all out.

I mean, you never know what sounds like what, or what sounds BETTER than what you have, till you try it. :)

Next for me is an Evo neck/Evo 2 set.

when I eventually do up my fgl custom dream guitar I wanna have:

1. GIBSON PAF (with chrome cover) - neck
2. DiMarzio Tone Zone (black) - bridge
3. Fender Vintage Noiseless sgl coil (black and angled)
4. Fender noiseless Tele bridge pick up (Chrome)

master Vol, master TBX and 20db gain boost

3 way tele style selector switch, 3 way LP style toggle and 3 way mini toggle to select modes...

Regarding the amp part, it is not true... It is how you tweak the amp and setup the guitar to maximise your tonal palette. I personally own the mg15cdr. I thought it was a shit amp when it come to distortion but due to the lack of funds, I am able to maximise its usage. First I complained about how the distortion sucks. It is fizzy and not solid sounding. Secondly I complain about how the guitar sucks cos it can't play and produce great sounds.

One day I tried to sit down and setup my guitar myself and guess what... I learnt alot by just doing that...

In order to get a nice distortion sound, I up my pickups making it get near the strings. Then I set the gain to about 3/4 full. I set the amp volume to 1/4 full. Then I control most of the distortion through my guitar and it can produce many tones with a quick trun of the knobs.

To get a full crunch, you need to rely on your palm muting. The muting will eliminate the fuzzy/fizzy sound. To get a galloping sound you need quick downstroke movement with slight muting. I can even controll feedback with the current guitar into the amp (mg15cdr). But it is true that the distortion is a little thin what most do is that they get another effect pedal usually a distortion pedal or eq pedal and chnage the sound to a thick distortion sound...

But I am having some slight problems with my neck pickup... I don't use it cos I have yet to find out how to make it sound nice...

Shredcow: how does the air norton sound? Been always dreaming of getting it....

Is it advisable to mixed and match from diff brand like air norton on the neck and seymour duncan custom on the bridge?

take care of the strong magnetic pull if you decide to do that. sometimes, less is more.

Well newguy.

one thing you have to note is that... a marshall MG15r has only potential up to a certain point. for example.. a guitarist already has a good axe - setup to perfection and he knows how to play properly etc...

after trying a better amp .. e.g marshall JCM 800 half stack.

and he goes home to his MG15r. no amount of tweaking/modding can match the tone of the better amp.

but its also a good point that the guitarist must know what he is doing. if not he will sound crap with anything.

I guess the choice of output is subjective and dependent on style. I like the low output of Anico 2 pro on friend's Les Paul.

Currently on Paf Pros and Evos, will be curious to try Evo2 and Mo' Joe if I have the chance to.

The Air Norton was a plesant surprise for me. Its my favourite smooth neck pup now. I used to avoid try it out because, the famous tone reference, John Petrucci's neck tone, was a bland boring tone for me. The Air Norton sounded jsut so overly glassy, lacking character. Well, I tried it and WHAM. It actually a pretty complex sounding neck pup! Its smooth first, but not like JP's too smooth tone (you can get that if you flip the pup, adjustable screws to neck), its VERY dynamic, its handles gain very well. I would say its warm too, not very biting, better suited to jazz or blues cleans. Excellent neck pup.

Yes you can.

I see, is that your PGM30? Its a Lo TRS there is it? It BADLY needs a Gotoh or OFR. 8)

ahhhh ... i see... never had the chance to try one... the steve morse y2k model honestly looks like vomit... prefered the old blue burst one. that one looks killer.

morse y2k - diffirent models diff finish... but sound wise on the new deep purple album...AWESOME....

It's a 300, so the bridge don't have much issue. I guess Lo TRS is not very favoured.

i'm one who invests in pickups more than pedals- if you have an amp that you are content with, you should give pickups your priority too, especially when you plug in striaght to the amp.

i enjoy listening to high gain tone from high output pickups interacting with an equally high gain amp. it's just a no-frills tone i embrace. however, high output units aren't the works when it comes to clean tones, that's where lower output units come to play. 8)

Why short change yourself? ;)

Get the Gotoh, better sustain and tone and tuning stability.

So far I'm happy with the edge pro, so don't intend to touch the stock setup.
