hey softies~! i m from malaysia and frequently visits this forum... finally signed up.. haha

anyway i need some advise from u guys coz i m pretty lost for the past few days and was thinking for quite sometime over the matter of guitar purchases... :(

yeah i know i read alot of guitar player asking the same question haha.. but i just wanna reconfirm myself..

well i ve been playing for awhile on my classical guitar already so i know some basics like some chords and some songs.. i ve been practising electric stuff (*scales, songs etc) on this guitar as well.. erm.. i guess i ve been playing for 2 yr already if i m not mistaken.. (* but slack off and stopped temporary in the middle.. hahaha)

i m planning to get a guitar despites my fathers disagreement..( *rebelling.. haha  ) but i m torn between choices of guitars..

i m still thinking whether should i get a higher end guitar straightaway or the lower end ones.. coz my thoughts now is to get a guitar that could last me..

Thanx in advance..!

welcome to SOFT

have you tried these guitars? i mean you got to like them before choosing between them.

Hi,

Welcome onboard. My personal suggestion is to get an average multi purpose guitar first, then discover what is the tone and style that suits you the best and then get another guitar closer to your style later.

A good guitar to start off with is a fat strat, and a good brand and value would be Yamaha. This guitar looks like a normal strat, except with a humbucker (double coil) pickup at bridge position.

Hi friend, strictly from experience, not likely to get a guitar that will last you for too long. There's always GAS.

What's important is get something that will propel your interest in guitar playing. Do you have anything in mind in the first place? :smt001

Hey man, welcome to SOFT. Anyway, yes it is better to start with an averagely good guitar instead of jumping straight into something higher end or expensive. Even though you may purchase something long lasting, in the future you may feel that this guitar may not suite your needs or playing style, and you'll relaise you'll be wanting a new guitar, and you'll go around trying guitars and all. So for now, I would go with mikemann's suggestiong of the yamaha models. I myself started out using a yamaha pacifica 112m. I played it for awhile and got really into electric guitar. However i found that it did not realy suite me. I even changed the pickups, sanded the neck, did lots of modifications on it, but still it didn't quite suite me. Now i still have the guitar, but it isn't my main axe. So anyway, starting along just get an average guitar to grow with, then realise your needs and go into the more specific kinds of guitars and all that. All the best choosing :D

hi there...welcome...my thoughts r same like dric..the yamaha pacifica 112J is one very good guitar to start out with...u shld try it

i feel you should get a decent axe to start on, playing on a crappy guitar can be discouraging, you might feel it sounds like crap and not very motivated to play. Not an expensive one just a decent guitar. Yamaha 112 or the 312s are nice to start with.

but, well, begginers(even if they had started on other types of guitars like acoustic, etc) can hardly tell the diff in sound between gd n crappy guitars :) ...

its not just the tone, its the playability, quality, etc...

you dont want a something that falls apart after 2 months of playing, or one of the pickups go dead or the tuner breaks off and stuff, or one that has sharp fret edges - resulting in uncomfortable play, you know.

so ya, its good to get an average end guitar

once you're acustomed with the electric guitar, and you know the tone you're aiming for, i guess thats the time you upgrade to the high end stuff

I wonder what you do to a guitar that can make it fall apart after 2 months .. Please tell me a brand that does that ..

Thanx guys.. yeah i heard alot of recomendation on the 112, but would like to know details like price etc..

I ve tried several guitars recently, so i would like to let u guys know wat i ve seen and hope to get some feedbacks..

Before that i would let u all know that my music influence includes clapton, BB king, some of the g3 stuff (u know the ussual few  , johnson, satriani, malmsteen etc), some of hendrix, SRV, Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins etc.. theres alots more.. but cant possibly list all of them here.. at least here is a rough idea wat i listened to and would like to play..

Yeah i do have some models in mind, heres the list wat i ve tried and want:

- Fender Highway1 --> cost: roughly S$1500
Heard lots of good comments on this, and it has the ussual stuff i need, i believe that this guitar could ve last me for a good load of time (* i dun know if this is a average guitar or considered as a high end already..)

- Fender MIJ --> (HSS pu) cost: roughly S$900
As for this, i seriously dun really know if this is genuine.. can anyone confirm with me that a Fender MIJ actually cost this low, some other sales person told me that it could be a Made in China, but as far as i know if it is MIC it would be a Squire..

I personally prefer a SSS if it is a fender, and this one is a HSS. Is there anyway i could modify it into SSS later?? i also heard that MIJ is ussually made of basswood, how does it affects the guitar?

Plz give me some feedbacks on this as well, i wanna know more details about MIJ fender, have only heard alot about MIM and MIA. Is this a high end guitar or average one???

- Squire Satin Trans Strat --> (SSS) cost: roughly S$480
This guitar is MIC, sounds ok but i m not really sure bout it.. cost i didnt really test it fully, some sales person recommends me those Squire which is made in Indonesia as they are more reliable.. plz give me some feedbacks on this..

-Ibanez GXR 370 --> cost: roughly S$500
read the review, seen the guitar.. but have not trully tested it. I tried one but the guitar was out of tune, so i cant comment on it.. According to the salesperson the whammy bar doesnt stay in tune well.. so my idea would be that this guitar has a whammy bar equivalent to other licensed FR trem.

Previously i liked the idea of a HSH and the highlight of the guitar.. a dependable Edge III, but i wouldnt want the hassle of a troublesome trem which are always out of tune.. i may not be rite, but this is just my initial idea..

------------

I ve tried some other fenders, but i ll leave them aside since they are much more expensive.. but since the salesperson suggested that i tried.. i might as well test it.. i liked the '50s alot.. sounds retro.. haha..

Anyway thats all i ve tested so far.. hope u guys wont find it too long or a hassle to read..

Thanx in advance.. :)

PS: I dun have fingers made of stell to be able to break a guitar in 2 within months.. haha..

hi, seems like you lean towards strat styled guitars more..seeing as to your musical influences, i think a Japanese Fender strat will suit your needs and last you a long stretch. They are available in SSS config and they are made for the Japanese domestic market, hence you won't find them here, save for imports. So they are Japanese made, not made in China. I suggest that you go for something other than the ST-43 as you can get say, an alder body strat with texas specials which will get u closer to higher end American strats. Assuming you won't lose interest in the guitar, this is a very good investment and first electric guitar..personally got a Jap Fender Tele and i can vouch for its build, playability and tone.

dont get high end ones first, get cheaper ones. have u gone to davis to try those copies? luther has some copies too...

from these copies, u either love/hate them as u improve. 8)

Jem007: i saw only one model from a shop, the salesperson wasnt sure where was it made of and specs... i think he was quite blur. i was quite worried coz i cant distinguish the strats from other strats and i cant find any online details regarding the jap strat since they official website is in jap

Tany: thanx for the advice.. but i dun live in s'pore.. its a pity. Probably i ll go down to s'pore someday in the chinese new year.

go down to luther music or Guitar77, they have a nice colelction of MIJ Fenders. They can prolly help you with your search.

i'm here to assure you of the Highway1's (all models...) splendid performance in terms of feel & tone. there will be skeptics here who would put this model down due to its:

*vulnerable satin finish
*non-American electronics/ hardware

those who dislike the H1 are probably unagreeable to what this series has to offer, otherwise, they are very good guitars/ basses to own.

about the GXR370: the Edge III floating vibrato works fine after repeated use/ subsequent string replacements. the initial performance isn't a true reflection of the hardware's functionality.

hey

For me,to start off,get either a yamaha 112,or even a samick.the samick at davies has a package at $199 with amp and all.the body is a strat copy and the pickup i single coil.but for me the sound is abit muddy but change it to seymour or dmarzio..my pal jus bougt it a week ago..do try it..btw Welcome!
