Hello people, recently is started thinking this way...from last year i picked up drums and self learn all the way. Through songs, but i kinda feel quite useless, like not knowing how to count at all. What should i do? Can someone teach me how to?

yes. these people are called drum instructors. you can find them at drumtube, youtube expert village and local music schools like yamaha, music lab, rhythm house, 8th note, etc.

haha hey bro

i'm also self taught, i pick up basics from yamaha then i decided they too slow ... i already can do basic jamming they still at 8th note. dang. some people in the group very slow.

so i quit and jam along to songs. i tell you man, it's all in the feel. i practice and just let my imagination go wild, i come up with all sorts of beats and stuff that JUST SOUND RIGHT in your heart. you just know when it's right and not. like it sounds like crap when your off by even 1 beat. don't be too technical when drumming, especially if your a self taught. it just takes the fun out of it sometimes i think.

oh yes i can give you 1 tip. when doing a fill, say, example only, that is 1 4/4 bar only, play your bass drum along, quarter notes, so it serve as your 'hihat' or timekeeper during that fill. you know when to end then, and come into the main beat on the onbeat after the 4 bassdrum beats.

cheers, and have fun drumming, don't despair and just let loose.

of course, there are drum instructors also. think music lab quite good :) hear alot of favourable reviews.

hi it is always good to count cos that helps you to perfect the songs. Drummers are tiem keeper & timing is always important. My teo cents worth is - better to play simple and in time than to do a crazy roll with terrible timing.

Invest in a metronome and tap as you hear the song, that indicates the tempo of the song. Then try to play with that bpm. Note you cannot play the song and metronome at the same time as the two metronomes (yours and CD) are not synchronised.

You can start counting by saying loud, '1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &' for 4/4 signature song. Most rock songs are 4/4 signature. Next, you need to know the bpm (wat i described in getting the metonome) to determine the tempo.

Remember - enjoy. Rome is not built in day. Invest ample time in your drumming.
Rock on? :)
