Help me on deciding a amp

Hi all! Im contemplating between Laney TT50 & Laney LC30 II. Which would be better in terms of tone, distortion? My music preferences would be Andy Timmons, John Petrucci, Michaelangelo, Opeth & stuff like that. Thanks

the laney vc30 are pretty good amps. But the drive on it isnt tha good, pretty neutral amps and they take pedals well. The LC30 is just a vc30 with a more modern eq voicing.

why not a marshall? tell me u're not going to get the artist's tones u mentioned just by driving the amp alone?

if i were u, i'd get a transparent sound clean amp with a good mid control and get effects to augment the sound. this way, u can take ur tone to the stage too. very logical.

You mentioned those guitar greats, then Opeth... well... I take it you like the lead tones of those virtousos and the massive rhythm tones of Opeth-style bands?

The 2 amps you mentioned aren't hi gained enough, PG uses the TT series and he has a DS1 or soem other pedal to goose it.

Im not getting the artist's tone. I dont play gigs. Its just for my home use. Im not a pedal person. I would love minimum pedals on the floor. Thats why i want my distortion from the amp, not pedals. Actually Mesa is my 1st choice. I've contacted Mesa also, but the price for the Lone Star or Road King is very steep! So i think Laney is my 2nd choice. But im going japan for biz trip next month, so im keep my fingers crossed. Maybe i could get a good deal over there? Who knows.

drive-wise, those amps you mentioned won't give you what you'd like to hear (citing your influences). the Laneys are too fuzzy at high gain settings. if you wish for an adequate competitor for a MESA-type drive, please consider Peavey's Triple XXX.

do check if this $2K price is actually list/ discounted.

whatever it is, the Triple XXX is one heck of a high gain amp, i prefer it to a MESA.

wah, peavey's XXX is super expensive! It's like 2K plus in Swee Lee. Though it's really awesome.

Just the head ?? well its USD1700 for the head >> USD600 for the cabinet
the combo is abt USD850~1000 all excluding ship >>>

the Super40 version isn't quite on par with the head/ the 1X12 driver equipped combo tone-wise. if one is really interested in a Triple XXX tone, the Super40 isn't quite a sound investment (forgive the pun).

Its for house use? How loud can you run your amps? :D

It is for house use. I know that i cant crank it loud, But i would love to find my tone in that amp, just like you. You changed pedals to find your tone. :D

We can give a you a list of a dozen amps ...you will still not find what you are looking for ...Bono had that problem :D
Tell you what whenever you see an amp ...go try ... try to figure out all the amp talk and learn a few tricks...then you tell us abt it here!!
For example if i tell you how cool a Jazz Chorus is, will you buy it ...just coz i painted a cool picture of that amp ?...i believe not.
I have gone through trucks loads and still like Bono .. but am happy with what i have for now !!

My advice , save your money ...buy used gear ...try ...no like..sell ...then do it again.

Thanks for your advice. But if i buy used gear, don like, sell, then buy again, im wasting more $$$. am i right? Since many softies say that Laney's drive is not heavy enough, I'll heed their advice & go try out other brands.

but dude, fact of the matter is, no matter how much you read up or take someone else's advise, you can never be sure its IT till you try it.

It can sound all cool and what not, but if it doesn't react to your touch, its useless too.

So yeah, you DO have to go and buy to try, then sell if it does not appeal.

Its not about saving money, its about getting the tone you want.
