Hi everybody I am very interested in picking up drumming and am looking for a drum set to learn and practice at home! Figured i'd rather get a drum set and learn it myself with help from the internet than spend it on lessons. Unfortunately i have no drummer friends to help me out. So can anyone recommend a drum set for a beginner and where to buy and how much? I'd be really grateful! Btw what's the difference between the expensive drum sets and the cheaper ones? Is it only the sound quality or are there extra parts.. (i know i'm noob.. don't flame me!)

Any Price Range?

Too many choices....for a basic model, there is Pearl Target, Tama Imperial Star, Grestch BlackHawk, Peace Demolition, Mapex Q or QR and many more.......

Just get a basic set and tune up properly..it will sound good...

BUt firstly, is noise an issue?

If yes, can consider an electronic kit for practical reasons.. .....

Wow thanks guys for replying!
Hmm budget isn't really a limiting factor. Of cos cheaper is better! :P
i also thought about an electronic kit so won't disturb neighbours. but i fear that electronic kits will spoil easily and is more ex. (saw webby the cheapest also almost 2k. *shock*)
I think the rhythm traveler is ideal for me! Know where to get it? Anyone got lobang? hehe =D

Are you living in HDB? I'm living in one too and I'm looking ard for a kit too.....posted in another thread but no replies lol.
I think you might not want to stuff ur drums with clothes and room with mattresses to hide the sound.

Perhaps an electronic one would be good. See if you can find a 2nd hand one =)

Just wanted to ask the drummers here, how is the "feeling" of electronic kit to acoustic? and is it easy to maintain or will it spoil easily? (since it's electronic stuff...)

Hope i can get some advice...any advice

Hi...My drumset at home is a Premier PK...a beginner set...
Bt true enuff, as i tuned it as the way i want it to be, it sounds like a high end drumset....
The drum skins i use is a evans skins....sound really rock solid babby....:p

aniways, for me, the feel of playing on a acoustic drumsets is really damn SHIOK...nth can beat it...tho i nvr played on a electronic drumset b4....bt, if u once start playing on a acoustic drumset, its hard to stop...

In terms of buying a drumset, there is a lot of brands to choose from...Mapex, Tama, Pearl, Sonor and so on...
Mayb u wanna try goin to the buy and sell section for a 2nd hand drumset...
OR, u wanna try goin ard Singapore and check the music shops...somtimes they have sales...

In terms of a difference between ex drumset and a cheap one, is basically a more sturdy and strong hardware, better wood for drum shells, esp Tama B/B drum shells....

Hope that will clear your doubt....;)

Hi zack,
wondering if you live in hdb or landed? how you manage to keep the sound level down? or you just don care?

Sound level is still the biggest pblm in Singapore housing lol.

And there're so many different elements in a drum set such as heads, lugs, skins, shells etc etc so if i want to buy acoustic, super difficult to choose for a beginner like me...or just buy those kit that comes with everything? Personally I like tama and pearl. maybe should buy the cheapest kit from pearl lol.

From experience, I started out with a Carlos set that costs $550. But not a reccomended choice even for a beginner. Reasons being -

- Hardware that rust and oxidise too fast
- Not very sturdy hardware
- Pretty bad workmanship
- Not value for money

Pay a hundred or so more and prolly u can get a

-Pearl Target
-Pearl Rythm Traveller
-Maybe a second hand Tama Stagestar

If u hav a budget of close to 1k

the Pearl Forum or Tama Imperial Star would be a nifty choice as well!

And it'll solve most if not all the cons that the Carlos set will set u back with. On top of that I think all the above mentioned sets come with entry level cymbals as well. For me its a value for money kinda decision.

Have fun choosing ! U don't get to buy drumsets once every few months ... =D!

Nice advice Perishz. I wouldn't recommend getting a Carlos kit either. On the other hand, for the same price, you could get a Peace Demolition, I've PMed iezhi about it. Do pm me if you want details.

I think quite a few Softies own the Peace Demolition so I do hope they can chip in and tell us more about the kit after using it for a bit. I've tried the Peace Legion, it was a pleasant surprise when I saw the hardware and all. Pretty good sturdy hardware for that price. Wood's Philippine Mahogany and I think that's the same wood use in many other kits like the Swingstar and if I'm not wrong, the older Indonesian-made Stage Custom Advantage. Too bad I'm a brand whore so I sold it off after like a week.

By the way, apparently Peace and Pearl share the same factory, got nothing to back me up though.

But as Perishz said, spend a $100 more and you prolly can get a, not necessarily though, better kit. I would put it as a Branded kit.

That said, if you're like me, being pretty particular about my cymbals and how they sound, you should set a side a nice part of your budget to blow on cymbals.

If I didn't have my kit now, I'd prolly get the new Rhythm Traveler. Sexy kit.

2cts; All the best y'all.

yeap pretty much most of it goes to paying for the brand.. but if its a decent amount that doesnt blow the budget..guess its ok.

Who doesnt want Pearl or Tama stuck onto their kits..lol.

But to each his own !

In fact, was deciding betwean a Peace and Pearl Kit b4 i ended up with the Pearl Vision.
Good Service from Peace i would say.. jus email them if you need any info.

Yup, that's why I sold off the Legion and got myself a Pearl kit instead. :D

Your kit is pure class I must say, my friend. Very nice finish!

iezhi: from your posting you must be very new into drumming I guess and probably have no idea which is your Ideal or prefered Kit or Brand Whatever for now ... that's ok.

For the time being, you need not get an expensive kit cause as you learn, you will somehow use & abuse the kit unintentionally - most learn in this manner.....till such time when you are good or knows more about Drumming & Drums especially (over here at Soft) will you then - sell the Learning Kit and get your - Dream Kit (everyone has their Dream Kit).

This way, $$$$ is spend more wisely and I'm sure you will buy your Dream Kit oneday as you learn and upgrade our Kits & Skill as time pass.

A decent Kit will do - I proposed an Entry-Level Kit, doesn't matter if it's Brand New or Resale (that is in pretty good condition). With so many Brand and Entry-Level Kits around in the market - Is there a Particular Brand you love most.....It is very important that when you buy any Kit - You must Love It - cause that makes you feel good. Feeling good drives and give you the impetus to drum more while enjoying it.

so - the word is Be Patient - Dont Rush into getting a Kit just for the sake of Getting A Kit Now...........Scout around and ask around(be opened and do a research yourself). Many Brothers/Sis here will be very pleased to help a fellow Drummer into this Passion...

Cheers !

Welcome to the World Of Drumming !

Electronic kit

Personally I don't really like the feel of the electronic kit...very different....i would rather stuff my drums with things to cut the noise....at least you get to hit the real thing....

However..it is good to have both...hehe....so in the night I can play electronic and day, acoustic....

Presently I can only stare at my drums in the night..but cannot play...hehe...

Yeah....really have to do your study before your purchase.....think people here are helpful and sincere.....plenty of advice for you...

Thanks for the info lester =)

For working pple, they cant really play on acoustic if they go out early and come back late for work hehe...in the weekends maybe
Ya, I really want to play acoustic too but first must find a way around the sound =X

To each his own, I say.

I play the Roland TD-3KW, I wouldn't say I dislike the feel of it, or neither would I say that I like it. It's comfortable and you can experiment with all kinds of sounds, which is a plus 'cos you don't have to spend extra for that experience. I really like the idea of mesh heads, but it's a pity that the higher-end and way more pricey electronic kits are the ones with full mesh-headed pads.

The new DTXtreme IV's lovely as well.

But of course, who wouldn't like have an acoustic kit to play on. I guess I've got best of both worlds then. I get to play the electronic kit very often, and I own an acoustic kit.

As gnohz said, I would say, especially for those who have their main practice times at night, to get the electronic kit. I'd rather play something, than nothing at all.

So it depends on your current situation. Practicality and reality comes into place, you make the call.

True.....important must at least have something to practise.......electronic still better than nothing...

actually to me...it is just the feel...the sound coming out of the electronic is actually quite nice...as it is like a mic up drum....

I actually like playing on the electronic cause u can also jam with the module...and change kit....it has all the advantages over the acoustic except that it is not real...hehe

Haha. Thanks for the advice peeps~! You guys are really a helpful and passionate bunch. Thanks a lot! Really stoked about getting my first drum set! =D =D =D!

Thanks jeepers and lester.

I'm a super beginner too so any sort of info is very crucial to my decision making =D

Btw, may i know what's mesh heads?
And also, will there be a great difference when someone who has practised very long on a electronic kit suddenly change to an acoustic?

@jeepers
Do you have any idea how the maintenance of electronic kits are like? Minimal?
Acutally I've my eyes on Roland TD-3KW too hehe...
One more thing, is it possible to change the single pedal to a double one without changing the V-pad?

Sorry for all the questions....:( :(
