Harder to sell gear these days?

Different generation bah. Excused? Not on our watch, right? HELL YEAH!!!!

Hehehe.

Anyway, about the topic of worthy topics... SOFT never got beyond a certain level. Its still really very much a forum for... the freshie. the newbie. the younger. That's what it all looks like right? Its just that much more difficult to have intense, useful discussions. I'd rather meet up with a group of knowledgeable people and discuss these things in person - nothing "elite" about this btw. Anyone who seeks / does their homework would be able to come along or even form their own little therapy groups. Mucho better option than SOFTenising ya?

So erm. Unfortunately, even those "inner circles" are overpopulated by good gear.

Ah well.

my experience selling stuff online is this - if you sell cheap, there will be a buyer. You can sell anything, just sell it cheap, there will be a buyer on the other end.

but of course, this is not what the topic is about..i would agree, hard to sell stuff now. As a buyer, i've got lots more option now with vpost and low us currency, there are great deals out there on ebay :D

Not just have to sell it cheap, but also able to give free gifts, like strings, cables, bag, or mayb next time can give away free air tickets!Hahaha

wa lau, any cheaper i die la bro. now with low prices come even lowerballers. its a new breed of ballers. i find singaporeans appreciate but dont collect vintage gear and stuff too. boutique has become a norm. gibson's and fenders seem to be having a tough time to move. everyone wants a super cheap deal. but sometimes, when you want something good, ya gotta spend man. i know this is a 'what the hell happened to soft page'' and were talking bout the buying market. but i just have to add that with the new breed of soft users, comes a whoole new breed of major lowballers and bad deals. ive dealt TONS of pedals, guitars and amps, and within 3 weeks, ive been screwed over 3 times, and lowballed more than 10 times. its insane!!!! and very frustrating

I don't know about selling gear (since I haven't disliked/regretted anything I've bought so far...), and I've been in here for less than a year, so I'll speak from a buyer's perspective.

Great gears are being sold at horribly great prices in SOFT, no complaints there. Abundance of them too... But with prices of everything else going up, and my part time pay not following anywhere near that trend, I've gotta really think before buying anything, as the money might need to be spent on something else. We're getting more prudent, and keeping them GAS in check. For now I've got an amp (not great, but working), my guitar (in the works, but still reliable enough), a distortion pedal (came cheap, but working great), and my cables, that are working fine as well. Even if my amp broke down etc, I'll still practice with my e-guitar acoustically, until I can get enough dough to get that desired amp... (Epi Valve Jr... *slurpz*... mod...) So yeah, I think quite a few people follow this mentality, thus aren't spending as "hiong" as before. Though I do feel sorry for people who are unable to get rid of their stock for dough, I'm still sad to say that gear I've been wanting, saving up for normally still get snatched WAAAAAYYY before I get enough $$$...

Don't know about dark ages or whatever, since I haven't been here that long, but I've always viewed this forum as a valuable source of info. Guitar technology and all are all but staying vintage. Lotsa new technology nowadays (ie. robot guitar, seems so.... 22nd century... futuristic...), so will have new stuff to talk about! Its just waiting for the appropriate person to spark the fire.

Lets be optimistic about things ^.^

I beg to differ... some mods like true-bypassed wahs do have added value.

yeah, I may not want your 10K hifi in the car, but hey if you zheng the car with some ultra lightweight alloy rims.
It'll be a plus point to me

Its an interesting point... Wonder if anyone's noticed.

Pickups sell for more out of a guitar. In a guitar? their value diminishes heavily.

Mods to pedals... Don't seem to sell very well, or so it seems. Mod packages? Pretty good demand there.

Maybe it is the fear of the unknown, and another spanner in the works.

FWIW,

I just sold a couple of pedals much cheaper than most others were selling them. I am thankful it went quickly but I see a couple of other deals going really slowly for good stuff.

Namle's guitars for one really went slowly. The SUB1 at $850 was just a steal (though I did get it for an even bigger steal 2 years ago)

Namle's Sabre as well took a long time to move.

I begin to wonder whether the value of the Eminence ramrod in my amp will leverage on anything if it has to go...

i managed to move an amp, a mfx and an axe within the span of june and july. how's that for a bad market lol. think lower end stuff easier to move. like for me i dun buy any boutique anyway. even if i do, it would be during new year or sth where money comes in. But i would not mind paying a higher price for really quality goods. some things arent meant to be bargained, need to learn to appreciate such higher quality stuff.

yupps. my observations are as such : things that have established a brand name, and is relatively cheap are much easier to sell. hype also plays a big part in the "ease" of moving your deals. shredcow is also right in that there is market saturation right now, and boutique is the new "normal". 4 years ago it was rare to see a person selling a prs, and anything more boutique than a boss had to be shipped in yourself.

= higher price, low stock, and ppl really open their eyes when u got new stuff. now got a lot of ppl (i think youngsters mainly, nothing against them i'm one too) that think cause either that they are consumer so can ask for low low low price, and that just maybe we are desperate enough.

thats why i try to price my stuff decently cause well, karma has its ways :P

so far this is the best thread in a long time, maybe we should keep it up yeah, and start a new trend in soft. discussions like this are a breeze of fresh air compared to, eh what guitar i buy ah? that kinda thing. (again, not insulting anyone, we are all learners (: )

and finally @ pedalitis, haha i feel sorry for u man. i would nvr sell anyone some half broken stuff. word gets out, street cred gone, gg. anyways if u are interested in my lovepedal i might trade with some of ur stuff. (: always good to help a brother out, esp since u stuck with a lot of hard to move stuff.

=ShredCow

Maybe because those who know more about these things are a bit older, having spent time and money to discover themselves, and are already working, hence more $$$ to throw into these things... Heh.

Well my idea is if you cant sell your stuff, well thats just too bad. perhaps its time to rethink your sales tactics. :)

To me, it's also about what you have to sell. Economics may look bad, but there are things out there that ppl WILL pay for if the price isn't astronomical/you intend to make a big profit out of the deal. It is more of a buyers' market, I generally agree, but choose the right stuff and the right price, and your stuff will move. There will always be lowballers/bad sellers, I've encountered many since I began dealing with ppl on soft and luther 2 yrs ago. Economic recession/uncertainty is definitely not a requisite for such behaviour.

The notion that a recession is imminent may not be as drastic as predicted. Various pockets of the economy will be affected, while some may remain relatively unscathed, so things should probably even out, though on a lower mean. Take a look outside during dinner time, lots of ppl are still eating out, albeit with some refrain for the higher-priced outfits. Continue selling your stuff if you need/want to, fellas, you just have to know your market and choose wisely(items and price).

another factor that makes the selling not moving fast is the acquired taste. E.g. doraemon shape guitar, even if priced way below market price, I believe it will be hard to sell.

Oh lol. saw some stuff like that at davis yea esp the doraemon one. hard to forget.

Im new here but i do realise that the stuff here esp the sell/buy guitar sections have guys who have been wanting to sell a particular item(S) for a long time so much so they have reposted threads and at times lowered the prices as compared to that of their original first post.

Then on the other hand there are those who wanna buy stuff which nobody stocks or are reluctant to let go for any price.

In other words the market nowadays varies alot on what people desire to buy/sell. At times what person A may wanna buy isn't what person B is selling resulting in a no deal situation.

In time to come the market will get better thats for sure.

Just have to be patient. As long as this great site is up with all u great folks the market here definitely wont die out :D

yes, James is already doing a great job on the classifieds in this forum. Sometimes i think as Singaporeans we tend to take things for granted. We should more often than not stop complaining and appreciate the things given to us.....

=superpotato_30

This is also partly due to the revision in the buy/sell section rules, where the threads do not get bumped to the top even if anyone bumps it/responds in the thread. With the high volume of sales traffic, one's ad just gets lost into page 2 and beyond relatively quickly, and a lot of ppl just don't have the discipline/patience/habit to go beyond page 1&2, or change the view-sorting to "latest posts" every time they want to see the ads. So sellers resort to reposting. With less "air time", the ads have to be more attractive as well, so a key move would be to repost with a lower price. However, I must say that the buy/sell section looks more orderly now. The mods had their reasons for enforcing this.

@Ized - haha, hey this is all not james fault, im really grateful for this kinda thing. We're talking abt the market, not really the platform invovled!

But partially true larh, people sometimes get desperate because of overcommitments, or rush to buy new gear, so people are lowering the prices like crazy. But still better than last time where constant bumping was needed if not u sure got no traffic!
