Guitar Stand Shootout

Les Paul = Heavy = More strain on the wall mount piece = Tendency to break is higher

Doesn't mean that shop hangs their LPs mean that it's the right thing to do. Micheal Phelps eats 12,000 calories worth of shit everyday, should I follow his diet if I wanna be an olympic legend?

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I thought my wall colour is pretty typical? *lol*

Naviros: Hmm...in that case, I think you're better off with keeping your guitars in bags/cases! Oh, by the way...the wall mounts are pretty fine, even for Les Paul kind of weight (cos my Ibanez artist weights heavier than some Les Pauls and I've been hanging it for years). If really feeling insecure, can always periodically check the mounts ;)

I don't understand this. If hanging an LP is wrong, why the hell customers spends their thousands buying an ill-threated guitar :D

yes, please follow his diet if you really wanna be olympic legend. Otherwise, you will still be "female-dog"-ing over the forum 10 years down the line  instead of becoming the first olympic gold medalist for Singapore.

the word on most forums i've read goes

1) that since an lp is pretty heavy
2) and that weight will put a strain on the headstock and wall mounting piece
3) therefore you shouldnt hang an lp for long periods of time

oh well if you wanna risk damage to your pricey les paul you can go ahead and do it. personally i'd rather not risk it.

This doesn't make sense. The stress from it's own weight from hanging runs upwards along the length of the guitar. (assuming that weight is heavy enough to stretch the guitar neck slightly) That same stress has another counter force pulling downwards because of the strings. This would in effect minimise the resultant stress on the neck itself. Furthermore, the guitar with the truss rod is built to withstand greater tensions than mere hanging.

The force exerted on the headstock is in effect an act of shearing. The headstocks of Gibson LPs are 3 piece. Those 2 additional wings on the headstock are attached by pretty strong wood glue. If the force exerted is akin to shearing, then that glue is more than enough to hold it in place.

Think of it this way. The weight of the guitar is approx 12kg max. That glue is strong enough to handle your own arms trying to pry that wing off which defniately can provide more than 12kg of lateral force.

Why would the headstock be damaged? I'd say only the finish would be a problem...

i see. thanks for the correction. i get the point about the neck..

but the point about the headstock. assuming you hang the lp for a long period of time, and there's is a constant force of 12 kg pulling on the wings, wouldn't that damage the headstock in any way? i assume you have some knowledge of physics, so it would be good if you could clear this up for everyone's benefit.
