I believe different guitar mags cater to different demographic or "crowd"..
-
Total Guitar is more Metal-centric, they tend to feature lots of "heavier" bands new and old. Popular music for the month will be transcribed, with backings on a CD.
-
Guitar Technique as the title suggests features lots of techniques/lessons. Comes with CDs or DVDs.
-
Guitar Player (my fav) is very "open" to lots of different music genres, opened my mind, ears and eyes to lots of stuff. Their lesson section is really "ear-opener". And their reviews re spot-on..
-
Guitar World is a bit like Guitar Player, but tend to cater to more rock/metal/heavier stuff. each issue have a number of songs transcribed.
-
Guitar World DVD is a lesson only version of Guitar World. Its more like a DVD instructional DVDs..
-
Guitarist is "all-rounder", and usually have really in-depth reviews, love their "Long Termers" review section where a chosen instrument is being reviewed for a few issues (months). A reviewer keeps the guitar/efx/etc for a long period and uses it frequently, and their "findings" are noted.. Valuable..
Sometimes i have a number of those mags for sale.. Example:
