Guitar magazines

I subscribe to Guitar Player via AllScript. I used to get Guitar Techniques, but it became repetitive after a few issues, as it basically features tutorials and not much on gear, and music.

Guitar Player is, like echoist mentioned, more open to the different genres, and let's you see from a wider perspective. Great reviews and information too.

I notice that there are tonnes of adverts in guitar mags nowadays.... a little too much in ratio if you ask me and comparing prices from a couple of years back, Guitar mags are a little pricier now.

But hey, There's the World Wide Web. Google is your friend. You'll be able to get more at your fingertips.

The best mag i got is the Fender Fronline catelog. Nice, thick and picture intensive. F.O.C at Swee Lee... Last time i checked, They kept it and it isnt free for all anymore. Maybe if you ask you might get a copy.

in the early 90s guitar player cost $5 and guitarworld $6.50, internet was still scare then...
i was a sec student and "struggled" to use my pocket money to buy them... it was taxing but i nv once regret doing that... whenever i flip them up they remind me of the good old days when rock n roll dreams was all that mattered .. hehe

however, fr another angle, with internet now being a "commodity" and so much FOC stuff u can get on the web, the price of these mag really doesn't justify its value.

well, i mean if ur agenda is spludge, then of cos is a different story :)

please dun buy your magazine from borders HMV and TIMES..
if u wan cheap.. please go to kinokuniya..

Total Guitar, $22 at HMV but $18 at kinokuniya..

buying guitar magazine helps.. i learn sweep picking and chicken picking through one issue of Total Guitar.

anyone heard of young guitar? or burrn.. those metal metal kind one.. those are really hard to find.. never seen a single issue in my life..

unhoylernest:K thx, will get my magazines from kinokuniya in the future

I guess I'll most probably get the next issue of guitar techniques or guitar world lol.Or perhaps just try a different guitar mag every month. Thanks for the explanations :D

I've seen Young Guitar magazines once in awhile but when I browse, it's the usual suspects. I like Acoustic Guitar and Guitar World magazines, those are the ones I read the most, but I won't buy them because I can always get information on the internet.

kino and borders price their mags decently. but actually if you subscribe, you save at least 50% off the cover price.

i've been subscribing to Guitar Player for a few years already. very worth it - articles are insightful, coverage is balanced, lessons are interesting. no tabs - but i'd consider it a great magazine for the "mature" guitarist - someone who's interested in going deeper into the instrument and guitar-driven music in general. got exposed to a lot of great guitarists and music thru this magazine. and the articles are very enduring - i can read my 10-year-old magazines and still derive fresh insights and ideas.

the UK mags tend to be more ex cos of the exchange rate i reckon. but total guitar, guitar techniques and guitarist are pretty good. i buy guitarist from time to time, if there are interesting articles. the UK writing style is very candid, so makes their interviews and reviews more personal rather than hyperbolic - as some US mags can get sometimes. only trouble is that they are a bit ex so i don't buy them so often.
