guitar effects degrading through time

hi guys..
im just a beginner at exploring new effects for my electric guitar..
i just wanted to know..

do effects sound quality degrade through time and usage?

is it much of a difference?

what are your takes on buying second hand effects??

THANKS!!

sound quality degrading? i don't think there's ever such a cause unless your jack is spoilt or your 9V battery is dying. however, there are some who like the sag of a dying battery in their pedals.

the only quality of a pedal that would degrade over time and use, is the cosmetic structure of the pedal.

second hand pedals are well worth it if you know what you're looking for and if the price is right. :)

electronic parts can degrade... the more tech savvy people here can expound on that...

But the reason why older stuff sound "better", is because, the electronic parts were made differently... last time, electronic parts were not as efficient/good as today (in electronic terms) but for music & tone, it worked!

2nd hand deals are good. If you know what you are doing and if you know the risk you HAVE to take.

couldn't agree more.
if quite cheap when you buy 2nd hand effects..you just have to find the right one..and you also can try out more variety of pedals..let say 1 new pedals can get you 2 used ones...
but there's no one stopping you from buying new ones..if you got money to burn..go ahead with new ones..

but if you're looking for 2nd hand deals on pedals like subdecay blackstars, moog murfs or blackstones, you're in for a LOOOOOOOONG wait. heh.

I dont think the quality of the sound would degrade over time. if that was the case, why would people send more money just to buy NOS IC chips or NOS tubes?

however, components do have a lifespan. nothing lasts forever so when a pedal gets wonkey, the best is to send it to an experienced tech to deal with it.

do note that modding pedals would degrade the price. in my opinion, I think replacing parts with the same value is the only way to retain the price of the pedal. there isnt much of a choice really.

the exact same thing applies on guitars. the value of a guitar wouldnt go down after a refret because it is neccessary to give the guitar a refret after years of playing.

Fully agree on the fact that electronic parts are going down in quality in the sense that nowadays, components are so mass made that the error percentage increases. No, not error in the sense that it screws up your circuit, but those minute marginal errors, example a transistors' operating point can vary from the nice 0.75V to a low of 0.56 to a high of 0.9V. Though this may seem like a small change, but they greatly affect the way your tone comes out.

omg..
i never thought i'ld be getting such fantastic replies!!
alright then..
THANK YOU GUYS SOOO MUCH! for all those feedback..
i think i know what i want now..
