Kai Chin, also known as Kaycee on SOFT, resigned from Guitar Connection over a year ago.

he has since become the technical manager at Maestro/Zen guitars.

he's the nicest, most professional guitar tech i've met.

whoever is doing repairs at Guitar Connection now, is definately NOT Kaycee.

almondx, what you experienced at Guitar Connection was pretty screwed up and i feel bad for you.

but please at least be more careful and get your names and initials correct before you flame away next time.. you could ruin the wrong guy's reputation.

chill..

Hi All,

I am the real KC. I didn't know there was a shareware version of me. I'm the latest upgraded version and all my previous versions and prototypes have been deleted :)

Jokes aside, I can understand Almondx's frustration. However, posting expletives freely on the forum just reflects bad on yourself. Don't have to apologise or anything, but at least retract my name from that post. It's a bad case of mistaken identity.

Anyway, thanks to all those who have stood up for me and appreciate what I can do for your guitar.

regards,
KC

Almondx: there's no rule written in stone about the value of caps. Some like 0.022uf, and some like a smaller or larger value. Usually on modern guitars 0.022 is the standard. The PRS McCarty comes with a 0.022 uf for e.g.

And on the subject of the toggle switch, I believe the switchcraft one will not fit as it it too tall. I've ground down such a switch to fit into a PRS cavity. You should get the right angle switchcraft toggle i.e the type found on SGs.

KC

The only thing I find weird is the "rave reviews" almondx mentioned. I never knew GC had anything good said about them after KC left. And what's with Guitar Workshop? Are they and GC the same thing? If so...Guitar Workshop is a far better place than GC.

Ah! Sorry, my mistake. Change KC TO Kelvin. I got the initials mixed up. BIG apologies to KC.

KayCee, switchcraft does come with a short toggle switch as well. Beside, a 90 degrees one would have worked and which was what I specified to Kelvin.

Hmm I just smsed Kelvin and he said due to the use of a reamer the hole will be jagged. He said he told me that he used an allparts switch, which I find strange because just before I paid, I told him "So $100 for cts 500k volume, cts push pull tone, switchcraft 3 way toggle" and he said "Yes, $100".

If Kelvin manages to settle this with a replacement switchcraft 3 way, and somehow the hole is smoothen out, I'll consider this case closed.

Okay, so now its cleared up - we know who's the baddie and stuff...

Cool.

Lesson learnt - don't go there no more ya Almondx?

I don't know how the hole can be "rectified". How about reaming the current hole into a large, but round, hole? Cool? :p

sighs..... this reminds me of a story while I was still guitar tech-ing.

A girl came to me with an active pickup kinda guitar. If i can remember correctly it was a fernandes or something like that. You know those kind with no battery no sound kinda thingie.

To keep the story short, the problem with the guitar was DEAD BATTERY.

The shop who shall not be named but is NOT the shop discussed in this thread THOUGH there are some history and links.... yadda yadda yadda....
1) Claims that the active electronics circuit board needs to be changed. A few hundred bucks or so.
2) Claims to charge a "Bench fee" to check the guitar, check only mind you. Its a certain amount but was negotiated to around $60 or so just to take the guitar out of that place.

The poor girl came to me for help, I pop in a new battery and charged her $2 or $5 or something like that and offered her an Ikea Hotdog that I "tarpau'ed" which she refused.

Moral of the story? Girls don't accept hotdogs from dodgy techs even though its from IKEA! Dammit.

Well, I went back to GC today to rectify the problems. Kelvin and I got off to a much better start - we came to an agreement, and everything from then on was smooth sailing. Kelvin did make the best of the situation with what he could, and I found that very reasonable. Had Kelvin made things right at the start of the incident it would have been a pleasant experience with Guitar Connection.

whats the compromise kelvin came up with to help you woth your mess? im curious to know, if you dun mind.

Well he swapped out for the switchcraft and smoothen the hole, there's still a lacquer chip from the tooling but due to the larger nut for the switchcraft it covers the chip well. If you refer to the pic of the hole at 2 o'clock you'll notice that there's a jagged edge of crushed wood. That's what I'm referring to.

so he admitted that it was his sloppy workmanship at fault here in this case and he's trying to rectify as much as he can for you or is he shifting the blame to smthing else?

from my personal experience with my PRS guitar, as well as research on the Birds & Moons forum, this is what i learnt:

1. if your PRS came stock with a 5 way rotary, the hole for the rotary WILL NOT fit a standard full-sized straight Switchcraft USA 3-way switch. the hole is too small and will need to be reamed to fit the shaft.

2. the smaller and cheaper Gotoh Japan 3-way switch (found at Davis Guitar) is able to fit without reaming due to its smaller shaft diameter.

I had this done on my PRS Custom 24 - wanted to change the 5 way rotary to a Switchcraft 3-way, but found it too big to fit. then i discovered the Gotoh can fit without problems. I've since changed the 3-way Gotoh back to the 5-way without problems too :p

this info might come too late for almondx, (i'm sorry) but i hope it might be of help to someone else..
