GT2, Crunchbox or Tubezone?

I've gone through all 3 pedals, GT-2 (old version which i recently sold), Tubezone (which i recently sold) and i have a crunch box on my board now. I am very into a Marshally mid-range heavy sort of tone right now and am constantly searching for one, a more JCM800 sort of tone.

The GT-2 and Tubezone are good at what they do. Give you that variety that you need, esp for high-gain applications. However, having said that, they do not do Marshall well.

For Marshall-like tones, this is the list that i'm looking at:

1. Crunchbox - (on board) lots of distortion on tap but it lacks that mid-range punch.

2. Box of Rock - (on board) very mid-rangey, plexi tone. But has a very loose bottom, may be tightened by a TS9 placed before it but that defeats the purpose. Not that much gain also.

3. Indyguitarist Plextortion - sounds tight and good.

4. Menatone King Of Britains (new model) - on the way. Will post a review when it gets here.

the od seems nicer than the dist mode. but it doesnt really have enough gain for me.

the Jack Hammer isn't the typical Marshall tube tone in a pedal, it will never be. if you think it sounds very Marshall-like, it's becaue the drive circuit is based on the MG series amp drive- solid state. i'm not refering to the small, practice grade MG models, i'm refering to the head-type drive.

imo out of all uve listed i like the plextortion best based on demos, the menatone website is rather uninformative, i mean verrry uninformative of their products, and the sound samples are quite average (this speaks a lot cuz usually companies who demo their pedals obviously try to make it sound its best)

btw im also looking for a jcm800 kinda tone but posted my question on TGP
ive seen most of the replies flaming the crunchbox
and recommendations of several pedals like barber direct drive, boss md2 (i noe.. wt-fudge?), kotb, plextortion and the original guvnor (which is highly recommended)

what i rly dont get is ppl saying that jcm800 based pedals gives u right on angus tones when angus was a plexi user

oh btw noe how to get hold of the plextortion w/o ordering online? quite interested

whatever clips out there, the Plexi Tone was seldom set to manifest a JCM800 type voicing. i think it's the prejudice that comes with the label- it says 'Plexi' so let's just dial-up a plexi tone.

the Plexi Tone has a boost function that'll transport it into the JCM800 territory if the need arise.

do you see yourself investing in a JVM combo if it's available?

Guys, from what I read, you guys are talking about Plexis "on steriods". Either heavily modded or cranked way up.

From what I understand, AC/DC's amps were modified by people who have started their own company, Wizard Amplification.

I wish I'd have clips of actual Plexis for you, but I lost the link a long time ago. It's off a German website, something like a amp clip sampler - and the gain is definitely not anywhere near what AC/DC or latter players with modded amps have.

In any case, pedal voicings are not representative of the actual amps voicing. In the ballpark, but they're not the same. They may use the same pre-amp circuit, but the difference lies in the extra headroom (of most) of the amps, the speakers used and the poweramp circuit, among other factors.

For that matter, the JCM800 was built with more gain in mind. Probably why people say a JCM800 is more likely to get you to AC/DC than unmodded Plexis are. If you want a modded Plexi pedal, check the description - for example, the Hao Rust driver claims to give a cranked Plexi sound - probably that is what you want.


Lastly, go around and try out the pedals. Rely on soundclips only if you are unable to try the pedals. You got to make sure that the pedal works with your amp, or something similar to your amp, or your guitar, again, amongst other factors.

Haha...make sure you outdo the Everitt Rd saga. Instead of videocam, use a decibel recording device and prove to the judge theirs is louder than yours. :wink:

Sub: My neighbours are not as good as yours. When i strum 1 power chord, they knock their floor once. strum 2, they knock twice. Can really hear the knocks. Then every night before i sleep, i will hear my neighbours thumping on the floor. damn loud!!! Do they need to walk so hard?
