SmFizz, don't give advice that is inaccurate. NOTHING is more full and heavenly sounding than a nice tube amp overdriven.
Anyway, I started off on a starter pack. I would advise you NOT to go down the same route. Buy a 2nd hand Epiphone Les Paul on soft, a roland cube 20x amp or sth in similar vein. That should cover you decently.
if you really want a pedal, don't buy a stock DS1. Its harshy, trebly and noisy. If you want to get a DS1, get one that's been modified. Common mods would be like Robert Keeley, Beez, Monte Allums so on and so forth.
IMO you can stick to the amp distortion for now.
