Green Day-inspired Punk Rocker wants to ROCK!

Hi all! I'm a Green Day-inspired music fan and I'd like to learn the guitar someday. But first,I need to figure out some stuff before I get started with any lessons, etc.I'm a total newbie,I have no musical background at all,I just want to be as awesome as Green Day!:D
I want to know what kind of guitar best produces the "Green Day sound"?Is it the Gibson Les Paul Jrs that Billie Joe frequently uses?(Recommend something not too expansive please!)Any special distortion pedals or stuff like that I'll need to grab to make that distinct punk rock noise? And,where's a good place to learn the electric guitar after I do get all the stuff that I need? Are there any value-for-money schools to learn it at?

Im not sure about what guitar, but you can normally get the EQ settings to get different bands tone online...
hmm i would recommend MusicTec or Academy of Rock :)

O.o Thanks for the tip off on the Les Paul Jr Starter Pack. But I want to know, what's the difference between Epiphone and Gibson Les Pauls?I know Epiphones are way lot less expansive. But is it value for money or is it plain cheapskate and a rip off in terms of quality?

the quality control of both are not very consistent. Epi's are considered as ''poor man's gibsons'' by some, bt sometimes their guitars are better than a few gibbys.

Well,I read the forums abit and it seems SmFizz you're supposed to be one of the more well-informed about gear around here! :)
Hmm...judging by what you said,I hope that means Epiphones and Gibsons are pretty much the same aside from the price tags?I'd want that to be the case, and I'd sure as hell rather take a "poor man's Gibson" if so!:D

HAHA your a bit inaccurate about that lol.
but anyway, epis are only sometimes the same as gibsons, it depends on the model.
however, for a starter like yourself, id suggest you get an epi because a gibson is way too bloody expensive .. like ive said on other threads, its best to get an affordable guitar when starting than get sth that costs a bomb...what if u decide you dont like it lol..
wasted.

HUH SMFIZZ EDUCATED. HHAHAHAHA. no la. joking. lak la samuel. lol ok anyway, epiphone's should never be considered 'poor man's gibson'. the quality control is really improving. however, recently, reports have been cropping up saying Gibson's quality control has been fluctuating badly. This should be your mindset- no matter what brand, if it sounds good to you, then go for it.

best of luck on your journey. have fun :D

You're better off with something else rather than the Epiphone LP Jr.

For Green Day stuff, you'd usually use humbucker pickups. Those usually come on Les Pauls or some strats. But in this case, a Les Paul would suit you more.

With around $600. You can get a $400 Epiphone Les Paul STANDARD Plus second hand here on soft. These are much better and way cheaper than the more EXPENSIVE Gibsons. Some other brands at lower price points actually have better workmanship than Gibson. Notable brands are Edwards or Grassroots.

Epiphone is a brand UNDER Gibson, so you're getting a legitimate LP style guitar that has similar specs (measurement wise) to Gibbies.

Sorry to rain on your parade SmFizz, but Epiphones are NOT poor man's gibsons. A higher end epiphone rivals a low-end Gibson. Apparently, Gibson discontinued the Epiphone Elitist line because people were picking them over Gibsons.

GDPunkRock, They are not the same. Tone wise, the quality of wood and parts used also differ greatly.

Amp wise, just get a Roland Cube 20x that should do it for now. The onboard distortion is decent enough to get you through such songs.

Best is if you could let us know what your budget is and we can work from there.

In the earlier Green Day years, he played a Fernandes strat with Jeff Beck's humbuckers. He still uses it but not as much as the Gibby LP JR.

I had an Epiphone LP JR a couple of years back. No prizes for guessing why. Hehehe.

Thank you guys so much for all the replies!
Well after reading all your very much appreciated replies,I've come to realize I only wanted to get a Les Paul Junior because that's what Billie Joe uses, and then I start to think - If I want to imitate Billie Joe that much,I'd have gone for the Gibson Les Paul Junior BJA Series since it was made by Gibson hand-in-hand with Billie Joe himself.Well, now I realize I'm just a beginner with no background in music and the guitar whatsoever and I probably shouldn't be spending so much money on a guitar, let alone the BJA Les Paul Junior Series.
Now that I'm more open to all kinds of guitars,I'd seriously consider a Fernandes Strat(Billie Joe's "Blue"???) or any other guitar. As long as it's affordable and value for money,I'd probably go for it.Because I probably have ZERO knowledge about the guitar(when j_m_s mentioned Humbuckers, all I knew was that they were pickups),I hope you guys who will keep up with you recommendations would provide more info to me,like how the pickups on one guitar is better than another, etc etc.I saw diaperman's recommendations on the Swee Lee Starter Pack Offer on the Epiphone Les Paul Junior and all the stuff it comes with.

I'd probably want to get an offer like that, with everything coming in a pack and that's value for money. If you guys ever get to try out any guitars(like if you guys ever happen to try out the guitars they display in guitar shops or something) that play power chords with just the right amount of distortion like how they do it in Green Day,do let me know!:p

Now that that's that,I want to rephrase what I'm looking for :
-Guitar
-Amp
-Distortion Pedal
-Any other instrument, equipment that will help me through the power-chording songs that Green Day plays!
-Budget between $600 - $1000

So far, everyone on S.O.F.T has been really helpful so I'd like to thank all of you again!

with a 1k budget and a extreme amount of luck, you can get,
a podxtlive ( $300)
a roland cube 30($200, basically same as the X but cheaper)
a 2nd hand epiphone les paul standard(like what james said around $400 plus)
or maybe a ssh fernandes strat ( damn i sold my MIJ one for only 300 wtf)
like i said, you need alot of luck to see these prices, but then again, this is actually pretty good gear and would last you prolly a million times more then those shitty starter packs.
actually this set up can last you alotta years, and their resale value is decent, so you need not worry about incurring a heavy lost.

Edit. do not get the starter packs, maybe im biased, but i do not believe in starter packs at all.

but starter packs help u get everything u need at one go, so u can just start playing immediately. But, for better gear, second-hand is a good choice

I wouldn't buy starter packs either... You can't choose what you want and some of these starter packs are usually slightly more expensive as compared to buying the guitar and amp seperately...

i repeat my stance because starter packs are shit
i started off with a starter pack, my learning curve shot up when i got proper gear

You guys are right.I checked out the starter packs offered by various brands/manufacturers and they are indeed very limited in their offers.Often, the worse part is the guitars offered are often the same ones, over and over again, just in different packs(eg. SweeLee's Epi LP Special II).I'm probably going to get a guitar,an amp,a pedal, and all the other stuff seperately so I'll have more choices...my best bet is to buy them all from the same retailer and bargain for a discount or something.
If that's so,what would you guys recommend me to get?Don't worry about different brands(even unheard of ones),I just want something that works and is value for money!
Opps, before I forget,I've been wanting to ask...Does the specific guitar model matter(eg.an LP and a Strat) if I want to get the Green Day kind of sound? You know, the right distortion, tuning etc.And last but not last, the distortion...does it come from tuning the amps or does it come from the pedal?

hmm its up to u bro..
anyway, the distortion can come from either ur amp or pedal. Normally amp distortions are a little sucky, so a pedal would produce a much better sound.
