For a $700 squier, you might as well get a 2nd hand MIM or MIJ Fender.

Yea, it's got shit for sustain, sounds like a an orang utan trying to hump a tree, plays like a cat strung up with 6 steel strings, it's definitely a fantastic guitar.

No one suggested Edwards? Grassroots? I think these are anytime better alternatives to Squiers... And I'd rather save a bit more for this than force myself to play a Squier.

I've been considering a Squire Classic Vibe...I'll say that price is a bit steep if that's what they're trying to sell them for here in Singapore. You can buy one in the US and have it shipped for less than that. No import duties on less than 400 bucks so why not just order from the states if they're trying to do that much? They should be 550 SGD tops, anything more is a huge rip off.

I third the Squier CV Tele. If you can get it at a good price, and have the leftover cash for upgrades, its a great find. It will have character unlike most MIMs I come across.
But if its over budget well..... get a job at a gas station... Zakk Wylde did, and it got him a Gibson Les Paul. Of course the mom did help abit.
And Burny/Orvilles/Grecos/Ibanez lawsuit copies of Les Pauls DO kick newer Gibson crap. Of course some fall apart, some kick Gibson butt.

right on bro! Cant agree more with you.
The current squier's are really not too great (no offence to squier owners). My son just picked up a squier last weekend and i have to say that the quality and build was certainly lacking in many departments.
either that, try to save up and get a proper tele. A used CIJ/MIJ fender can be found on the forums from time to time. You might be able to pick one up at a decent price.
Edwards are getting great at replicating now. they have a very nice line that you should check out as well.

standard value has some pretty decent and nice tele's. the Timbre ones are not too shabby, and if i'm not wrong, swing guitars ( which SV also carry ) have a pretty decent tele too. if i'm not wrong, the prices for both are below the 500 mark, the timbre being roughly 200 odd.
The swing T1 looks like a decent buy too =)
