Getting the best sound!

Hi Guys,

lets share some of your experiences with getting the right sound out of your effects
You can have the best, the most expensive pedals, but cannot get the right sound

Let me start first!

1. Listen and sound check your pedals with the song.
- Your ears don't lie. Guitarist just need to have the patience to get the right sound.

2. Sometimes, less is more.
- You don't have to have the most complicated pedal setups to get the best sound. Learn to cut back! Simple and clear always beats complicated-ness :)

:)

haha you can have the best effects, but if you're playing through a bad amp, might as well not have them. Good amp important for good tone, BUT then again, tone is in your fingers. Look at Jack Thammarat, he can get fantastic tones out of cheap gear

can anyone please do a good deed by recording a simple clip of the good sound which define the good sound we are talking about here, if not we be going round and round just reading words of good sound, but ironically, cant hear this sound, physically.

True, but a good sound differs from person to person.

To me, this tone is good:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMIYSod-mUk
But to someone else, it may not be.

I think John Mayer's tone is pretty good in certain contexts, but some people think it's muddy and disgusting. Very subjective.

Good tone is not entirely subjective:

When you record, depending on the type and the register of the notes you are playing (distorted or clean), if you plan to layer tracks, you will have to compromise on an amazing sound for single guitar tracks to get a cohesive sound when all your tracks come together.

Maybe "good tone" is not as accurate a term to use as "effective tone". If you are aware of the characters of different guitar types and different amp makers, you will be better equipped to choose a piece of equipment that suits the job at hand.

Pick selection will also influence your tone. The idea that "tone is in the fingers" holds some weight, but it's more like these players are able to take a given piece of equipment and make good use of it. Get to know your gear, and all gear you come across, you will develop your own personal sound and you'll know what equipment you'll need to bring it out.
