This is my first NGD post on soft.. Figured this one was pretty special
A Blackmachine B6!
Thanks guys,
1) Yep, it is Feline made. It initially bugged me like hell, but after doing extensive research on SS and the other forum posts by Nolly, etc, apparently every single B6 in existence has had Feline's paws all over them. The B6 was created with the involvement of Feline in mind. The arrangement was for Feline to source for the wood, do rough shaping for the body and the neck, and piece them together. Doug then does the final sanding/setup, etc. IMO, for branding purposes, the role of Feline wasn't as widely publicised in the beginning, but now it's wide out in the open, especially with Jonathan from Feline taking an active role in the social media space, as Doug from Blackmachine appears to be rather internet-shy. If you ask me, the whole 'Feline made', 'Doug made' is a load of marketing crap to drive even more hype for the B2/B7s.
2) Like one mentioned, the Blackmachine camp is split 50/50. The fans have really got their panties in a bundle about them. The haters usually preface their nonsensical drivel with 'My friends' Blackmachine...', 'From what I hear online...', 'It's a $5000 guitar....', 'I can djent with my $20 Ibanez...'. Disclaimer, I bought the Blackmachine blind, purely off the back of hype and the Jesus-worthy praise lauded by the 'significant progressive guitarists of this era'. I thought it looked awesome, and sounded like what I was looking for. See, the Blackmachines do something very specific, very very well. That high-mid cut that is so iconic of today's progressive metal is available in spades with the B6. And that sound makes my ears happy and my balls tingle. The B6 has a unique sonic signature, that despite the Suhrs I've owned over the years that have had similar specs on paper, sounds absolutely different. It handles low/drop tunings like a dream (apparently due to the placement of the bridge vs machine heads). It is not a versatile guitar by a long stretch, but playing more Sweet Child O'Mine solos weren't exactly my thing anymore.
3) Justifying the cost is impossible, so don't even bother. It's a ridiculous sum of money for a guitar Malcolm could probably build from IKEA for under $300 bucks. Two piece swamp ash, 3 piece maple neck, BKP pickups.. that's about it. No burst, zil paint, missing binding, zip polish, sans inlays. It's the worst deal of the century. I paid slightly over $5,100 SGD, which could have scored me a really nice PRS 408 hanging in Davis. V12 finish, beautiful curly maple, binding, cool brush stroke inlays... you get my drift. 5 years back, the B6 was £1300 pounds new, these days it's £2500, and set to rise. There is also a sudden surge of both note worthy, and less than significant builders riding on the hype wave, bashing out near-identical copies of the B2/B6. (For those not in the know, the Blackmachine B6 is essentially a barebones version of the Blackmachine B2). Couple of months back, someone posted on TGP and SS with a WTB offer of USD$15,000 for a B7 - essentially a 7 string version of the B2. Nobody budged. Either the hype had completely drove the market insane, or it's testament to the quality and uniqueness of the instrument. IMO, it's both.
