PRS 513
List: $8,200

The PRS 513 is now available here, looks like the price tag is beyond reach for most of us...

yo subversion, thanx for the gibson sg special review. i wld like to find out more abt ur ibanez sz320. i'm considerin gettin sz720. theres not much reviews on dis gtr @ harmony central. SZ 1220 Prestige is nice but kinda ex. the sz series seems to haf thick body, is the tone thick as well?? i wld prefer tone close to sg special (i like the thick sound :D )i'm gonna chg the stock PU to emg81 & 85 if i get the sz720. wats ur suggestions? \m/

hi bro. the diff between the SZ 320/ 520/ 720 are merely cosmetics. the flame top of the 520/ 720 are visually appealing but that's about it, its contribution to tone is marginal (what can you expect from a mere laminate top...?). also, the 720 features fancy inlay, if you like them then by all means get the guitar, but remember, this again isn't a tonal feature- purely cosmetics. playability for all these models are comparable, except for the 320MH, which isn't lacquered- i prefer this finish, you might not like the 'bare' feel...

take the cue from Marty Friedman- while waiting for his signature series to be completed, he chose to have a 320 as his main guitar- no fancy cosmetics, just something that works... i'm not saying the 520/ 720 are lousy either, if looks are important to you, then choose accordingly.

my friend if you are gonna change the pickups to EMGs, it doesn't matter which guitar you get- they will all sound alike.

yea dude. how abt the general view on the tonality of ur sz320?? wats non-lacquered finish??(dose non glossy type??) u mean emg will sound the same on any gtr??\m/

non-lacquered finish refers to the lack of a final gloss coating like that of the Fender Highway1 body/ simply bare wood without any colour stains, like mine here:

the SZ320 is a fairly midrange inclined guitar mainly due to the default pickups. i've swapped mine to Duncans & they are the ones that help this guitar sing... yes, with the right humbuckers in there, you'd get thick, chunky bottom end but it all depends, whether you'd want to invest in a more preferable tone. for a less trebly response, the black SZ320 is a good choice to start with.

that's basically it with EMGs, they make guitars sound alike. people who invest in EMGs know:

*they want high gain response, nothing else matters
*they like the feel & sustain of their guitars, they don't mind the EMG taking over their tone

i respect the unmatched response of active units with regards to high drive settings, but i prefer hearing my guitar sing thru passive units... it's all a matter of preference at the end of the day... 8)

Hi all, i got a budget of SGD2000 for a guitar, any suggestions or recommendations? subversion? get a new one or a good second hand one?

ermm... if you are refering to my SZ320, i bought it new...

if you are refering to your $2K budget, it might get you:

*a used LP Std
*a fresh American Series Strat

haha sub you're really quite a gear fanatic..the people at sweelee sure know u well huh..? can expect u there twice a week then maybe once in 6 months buying a new axe from them haha...anyway anyone knows what happened to this pedal fanatic called 44ofjuly? maybe he change nick i also dunno...

yea dude. i hear ppl sayin active PU sounds too clean (kinda like comparin analog to digital) & it sounds the same on all gtrs.

i saw gibson.com talkin abt LP with AAAmaple top, which will balance up the tone. wats the "AAA" mean :?: isit like grade kinda thing :?:

so its a 1piece mahogany body haf a darker tone compare to mahogany body wif maple top :?: \m/

maple grade hardly affects the tone, it determines the visual attractiveness, that's about it...

a maple capped instrument (regardless of the base- alder/ basswood/ etc) is suppossed to enhace the midrange. originally, Les Paul's idea was to have the entire body in maple, but Gibson was against it because it'll be very heavy...

thanx dude. jus wonderin which duncans u haf on ur sz320 :?: i always heard the fave config of duncans is JB on bridge & jazz on the neck. wats ur view on dis config :?:

wats ur view on buzz feiten vs earvana :?: i only noe dis 2 r suppose to help ur axe to inntonate proper anywhere on the neck. so far i only noe gtr workshop @ bras basah does earvana installation for $90. issit really dat effective :?: anyway i gonna get a washburn wi66pro which comes wif buzz feiten  \m/

my SZ320 has:
*NECK: Duncan Alnico 2 Pro
*Bridge: Duncan Custom Custom

the JB + Jazz combo is pleasant but if you favour the JB's midrange, the Jazz feels kinda lacking. the jazz sounds immaculate clean/ slightly driven, if you wish for a unit with better drive, the jazz is an under-performer IMO.
