Haha, im from NUS too. Looks like we have a huge community here.
Gargamelesp, we were jus kiddin man :P

Your amp looks monstrous and meaty, are you in a metal band?

I got it now !! :smt115

The glassy front panel is for you to look at yerself while playin ...cool !!
tHESE gERMANS are way smart dude !!

just wondering (not criticizing),

do you gig in stadiums/arenas? if not, did you buy a 150w tube amp to play at home?

yes, maybe you like the quality craftsmanship of the builder, but i can't imagine you playing at home with the volume higher than 2 on the volume knob without the police knocking on your door.

even with a master volume/gain controls, 90% of the amp's potential is likely to be unused

to me it's kinda like buying a 400km/h Bugatti Veyron and driving it in Kallang carpark.. 8O

is it such that high-end high-gain amp makers just don't make lower wattage amps with the same features as these big ones?

once again, just wondering, not criticizing. that is one cool amp

radius: its wierd how everyone assumes im in NUS when i said i am in uni, but you are right, im from NUS. heh.. well im not in a band, but its always been my dream to get crushing metal tones -- been playing with marshalls since day one

goose and edder: its all about the looks, and tuuuuubes!

ben: yup, ive thought about the wattage issue for a long time. i realised that even with my old 50w amp, i couldnt turn the volume past 2 at all. ive tried many amps of different wattages (when i was in the GC hollywood) and i realised that for any amp above 50w, volume will not be an issue anymore since i will never be able to crank it

when im looking at amps, instead of looking at the wattage, i see if i like the tone ( at lower volumes) instead. ive not been able to demo this in real life so i based my choice on many recordings which were played at bedroom levels, and i liked what i heard

im not so sure i agree with your statement that the amps potential is largely untapped because it isnt running at high volumes. granted, it may sound better when turned up loud, but i personally feel that so long as you like the sounds at the volume which you most commonly play at, its a good enough reason for me to get it. plus.... its always comforting knowing that if and when the day arises where i need the power, it is there on tap!

i think your 2nd last statement that "is it such that high-end high-gain amp makers just don't make lower wattage amps with the same features as these big ones? " rings the most true. If you take a look at all the high end high gain amp makers such as VHT, DIEZEL, BOGNER, ENGL and such... majority, if not all their amps come in 100watts and above. If they made a 50w amp, and i like its tone, id definitely get it over my monster. Its gonna cost a bomb retubing this one

Just spent a good 2 hours playing and tweaking with the stuff, and it definitely sounds nice even at lower volumes. tried blasting it for 10mins and so far still no sign of the cops!

Very nice powerhouse amps here ... the mesa and the engl should share a stage some day... turn it to 8 and let it ripppp....

gargamelesp,

thanks for your reply.

when i said 90% of the potential i meant sheer volume :D

with its master volume or gain control, i think your amp should still sound as good at low/moderate volume. its just that you won't feel the wall of sound or impact to the chest effect, hehe.

im glad you agree with me on the other issue of high-end high gain amp companies not offering lower wattage amps with the same features. i guess their main target must be the performing artists who play in large venues?

'high end metal amps - high wattage doesn't mean high end performance'

someone should discuss this topic on TGP (www.thegearpage.net) more. then maybe someday, the amp companies will listen and make full featured 50w metal amps for domesticated metalheads 8)

snyway, one day if you ever get to bring it out to a gig, your engl will blow people's minds..

So, when I stumbled across this new JP6 mystic dream, I thought I'd give it a try. I was a bit disappointed with the tone, because I remembered the JPM to be very bright and crisp. This one is a bit muddy, due to the D Sonic, and I think the Neck pup was also wound to sound fatter than the Air Norton, which I'm not a big fan of. But that's easily remedied. What I really liked, was the forearm cutaway (damn comfortable), and the new neck profile. Felt like a thinner version of the old one, but not flat like a JEM. Close to a JS neck. The old neck was better for chording, while this new one was better for leads. But this guitar, being an EBMM, was ridiculously well made, and the Piezo was a nice refreshing addition.

Hey whitestrat, thorough review of your Mystic Dream here man. Looking forward to share more with you on ebmm in future posts. See you around in the ebMM forum too.

50 WATTS? OMG

30 watts is ENOUGH man... ahaha.. My jtm45 with a 2x12 - in a room cranked to 10 was painful. Sounded great though.... :)

Vernplum's 15 watt thd univalve when turned to 10 was Loud as well... but softer due to the 1x12. with a 2x12... i forsee it giving about 70% of the JTM's volume.

so many metal amps..

looks like i will take a picture of my .. " ah pek music " amp...

hell, even my marshall micro amp is loud for late night use.

if i'm getting a tube amp, it'll be the mesa boogie express 50. switchable from 50 to 5 Watts. otherwise its akin to buying a XXXXXXL shirt for my L size
