for those disgusted by the green yamaha, you can skip this post.
feedback,
nice to see that green yamaha! i've always been curious about that series.
a friend of mine bought that exact model from combo shop in '94 too. i haven't seen that friend in ages too.
shortly before he bought that guitar, i bought its 'sister' model, the YG821DMR, and i'm still loving it today.
it's interesting that the green one is called RGZ820R in the ad, because it's known as the YG820DR too. however, i believe it's really the same guitar, but different names for different regions (US vs Japan). the YG821DMR is also known as the RGX821DMR.
could you maybe check the back of the headstock and look for a small transparent sticker for the exact model number?
however, i believe your guitar may be made in taiwan instead. just guessing though. check the guitar's back, near the bottom strap button, and you may find a small note of the manufacturer's info.
from what i know, the YG821DMR was worth about US$1000. so all of us definitely got a steal at the combo sale more than 10 years ago.
stock YG820DR and YG821DMR side by side..
YG820DR:
- 22 frets
- basswood body
- maple neck & rosewood board
- HH (5-way switch)
- control is only volume
- green dots (very cool)
- green plaid
- inverted headstock
- not sure about the neck joint style
YG821DMR:
- 24 frets (20-24 partially scalloped)
- sycamore & alder body
- maple neck & maple board
- HSH (5-way switch)
- controls are volume & tone
- abalone dots
- gentle sunburst
- inverted headstock
- rounded and recessed neck joint style
i think the trem is the weak link for both guitars, as it's the TRS-Pro. quite unpredictable. it can be very serviceable for massive whammy abuse sometimes, but yet it can drop the ball pretty badly once in a while, causing retunes. thinking of dropping in a gotoh there one day.
whoa, pretty indulgent post by now.
to sum it up, i believe both guitars sound great.
