F.Rose bridge

I've just gotten my first guitar with a F.R, I suppose it's already pre-setup. And I'm uncertain on how should I proceed, do I tweak it, tune it and leave it? Do I have to do anything? Or what? Damn, I'm rambling.
You get the picture. Advice please!
Anyway, it's an Edge pro. :D

Take a look here first.

No need to restring 1 by 1 if you know what you are doing.

And besides. good FRs result in not having to touch your tuners for up to 1 1/2 mths. Its THAT stable.

Ah .. thats prolly a good FR bridge. But i had quite a bad experience with mine, and I sold if off cuz perhaps I don't know how to use it. =)

mine doesnt go off tune at all. maybe like for a long period of 1 mth? and with whammy still stays in tune! gotoh rocks! hehe

i saw ranking selling a floyd rose which is a licensed floyd rose only for $35...so it must be less quality than gotoh or edge right?

licensed mean they are made like the good ones or just made?

I believe it's with regards to the Patents held by Floyd Rose. Just cos it's "licensed" doesn't mean it's the same design.

As far as parts goes, it's usually "u get what u pay for". If something as complex as a locking trem sells for just $35, dun expect it to perform like the high end versions. Chances are it's poorly built.

I hold the same beliefs on hardware parts as active electronics. Between a cheap skate active preamp/pickup and good passive ones, I'd rather take the passive. Same with locking trems.

Yeah thanks, daniel.
I checked out the vids from karloff's link and proceeded to change the strings and tune it up myself. Took a great long while, but when it's done it's just so sweet.

I got a small problem with my Edge III. When i tune it, with the nut unlocked, i tune after few seconds it will get out of tune .... So i dont really know what im doing wrong ... I mean i got it ok now, but is that supposed to happen? Cause im using my fine tuners more than i should i think ...

Detroit,
It's all about the tension between the strings and the springs, in a F.R, all the strings are connected, so to speak. So when you tune it one string, the others will be affected.
You'd have to tune it repeatedly. Tune from the lowest E to the highest, and repeat this procedure. The tunings will always be slightly off, until all the strings are in 'equilibrium', or stable. Apologies for the bad explanations.
Anyhow, it will eventually be all in tune, just keep tuning, and tuning. It takes a while.

I hope it helps, it works for me.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think what you should do is this:

1. Reset your fine tuning adjustment screws to approximately centre.

2. Roughly tune to standard (or whatever tuning you prefer). Doesn't matter if they're off by +-1 semitone.

3. Lock your locking nuts.

4. Adjust and tune to pitch using the fine tuning adjustment screws.

Thanks thor and phil .... Now my edge is alright, locked and it doesnt go out of tune .... Phil , i have to thank you, i knew how a FR type bridge works, but now you really made me understand... Thanks guys ... The reason i wouldnt want to overuse my fine tuners as i think that it should be use for a little tweaking, thor ... Oh ya, and still must go collect my trem arm from swee lee havent done that yet ...haha

Hey no problem, detroit.

Anyway, I raised my F.R a little so as to eliminate a slight buzz on the lowE. I only raised one side, as I didn't want to increase the action of the higher strings.
And now my bridge is crooked. One side (bass strings) is slightly higher then the other side.
Is it alright? Will it give me any problems whatsoever?
It is in tune, and its an edge pro.

I similarly posted my query to Shredcow, all advice/opinions will be greatly appreciated! I really need help here.

The 2nd fret on my G and B strings are really buzzing ... I don't know what happened, just came home and this happens. Think either my action too low or my truss rod needs adjustment ...

Guys, its really scary to read all of this happening to your FRs. Sometimes, words can't describe it enough and certainly will not help much for us to help you.

I still strongly recommend you bring your FR to a tech before you end up dulling the knife edges or stripping a screw or something.

Btw, Thor, the fine tuners should be almost out. On a FR system, you seldom have to loosen, tighten more likely.

In anycase, refer to my post on how to restring a FR, for how to make a jammer so you can tune without having to bother abt the tension issues.

I put a dowel rod to prevent the thing from sinking back ... I have to ask a question .. What is a knife edge, i see this words many time in FR faqs ... And also, what is the neutral level for Edge 3??

agreed :) i just leave it as centre as i put there to tune roughly to pitch.
