Hmm.

Manchester United produced a smash and grab 1-0 victory at Anfield that could well see them clinch the title.

They had been second best to Liverpool for long periods and when they had Paul Scholes sent off with four minutes left, a point was surely the best they could have hoped for.

But in injury time John O'Shea blasted home in the six-yard box with what was United's only shot on target in the whole match.

It was so crucial. The United fans celebrated as if they had won the title and their players were soon to join in after surviving a stunned Liverpool's attempts to fight back in the dying seconds.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was true to his word that he would not flinch from fielding a very strong side against the Premiership leaders.

Benitez had all his big guns back and even risked Peter Crouch on the bench despite his broken nose and the need for an operation next seek. Steve Finnan played his 400th career league game.

But that is a little short of Ryan Giggs' remarkable 700 matches for United, who opted for Henrik Larsson up front and Louis Saha on the bench.

The opening was tense and scrappy, and the first decent effort was a 25-yarder from Daniel Agger that dipped over Edwin van der Sar's bar on 12 minutes.

A minute later United put together a fine move, instigated by Giggs who gave Patrice Evra the chance to chase to the line and cross for Cristiano Ronaldo to stab wide at the near post.

Then Finnan crossed for Mark Gonzalez to send in a header that Edwin Van der Sar saved to his left.

Liverpool used Steven Gerrard largely on the right, hoping he could drift inside to support Xabi Alonso, but it served only to give Scholes too much room and the United man dictated much of the play.

Ronaldo burst through to fire over, Scholes having set up the play, before at the other end Craig Bellamy saw an effort deflected away off Nemanja Vidic.

A tapped free-kick then saw John Arne Riise fire a left-footer inches wide from 20 yards.

Liverpool started to peg United back into their last third and one chance created by Bellamy after he had robbed Vidic somehow eluded Dirk Kuyt in the six-yard box.

Bellamy's pace continued to give United trouble, while Gonzalez fired in a 20-yarder that Van der Sar held.

But the dangers of United on the break were all to evident. Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo were an increasing threat, and Alonso got himself booked for kicking the ball away on 40 minutes after incidents with both United men.

Two stunning tackles by Jamie Carragher followed on Ronaldo and then Rooney, while Michael Carrick was cautioned for holding back Riise.

Gerrard and Bellamy both had good chances in the opening minutes of the second half, before Bellamy had a close-range effort ruled out for offside.

Bellamy and Kuyt both had efforts blocked, and then Riise fired a 20-yarder just over the angle.

But United responded with breaks of their own, Ronaldo prominent, and on the hour Liverpool replaced Gonzalez with Fabio Aurelio.

United soon took off Evra and sent on Mikael Silvestre as both teams now had more more defensive players on the pitch, such was the delicate balance of the match.

Then United made a positive move, sending on the speedy Saha for Larsson, the Swede in his final league match for the club before his loan ends.

After 68 minutes Jermaine Pennant replaced Bellamy, who had run selflessly all match, and Gerrard was pushed forward.

United lost Rooney after a foul by Carragher that cost the Liverpool man a booking. Rooney had damaged his knee and limped away to be replaced by O'Shea.

Crouch was then sent on for Mohamed Sissoko and on 80 minutes Neville was cautioned for bringing down Pennant.

Crouch found space at the far post, but when a header seemed his best chance of scoring, he opted to bring the ball down and volley, van der Sar saving well to his left.

Four minutes from time Scholes managed to get himself sent off for swinging and missing Alonso with a right hook. The Spaniard had been holding the United man's arm and having already been booked, he was fortunate not to receive a second yellow card.

Van der Sar saved superbly from a Crouch shot, but in injury time United stole the points when O'Shea scored after a Ronaldo free-kick had rebounded off Jose Reina.

The goal stunned Anfield, who had seen their side dominate much of the second period but without adding the finishing touch.

For United, it will be a result savoured for years, one that almost certainly gives them the title.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes the last-gasp 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield was a 'massive result' in the Premiership title race.

Ferguson told Sky Sports: 'It was a fantastic result. We had a lot of narrow escapes and Liverpool upset our rhythm. They will feel very unlucky and they deserve to.

'It is a massive result for us. We broke away late on against Fulham and scored and now we`ve done it here. We`ve had that bit of luck in the last two weeks but you need luck if you are to win titles.'

The Scot is still not ready to celebrate the title however.

'There is a 12-point difference but I don`t think anything is impossible in modern-day football. In 1998 we had a great lead going into an Arsenal match but we had some terrible injuries. The pool then was nothing like as strong as it is today though. That helps us.'

United midfielder Paul Scholes was sent off with four minutes left after swinging an arm at Xabi Alonso,. He will now miss three games.

Ferguson said: ' I`m not sure what happened with Scholes but it`s a disappointment for us.'

Striker Wayne Rooney hobbled off clutching his thigh after a high tackle by Jamie Carragher. 'It looks like a knee injury but we`ll have to see tomorrow,' said the United chief.

Eh come one lah... whole match MUFC only had one shot on target??? Compared to LFC's 17 shots on goal?

Needless to say which is the better team (Merseysiders), especially when that kelong goal is at 90+2min.

with the point advantage now for Man U, it will be a shame if Chelsea wins the league for a 3rd time, come May.

Too bad for pool, not their day 8)

if we see from the other side of having 17 shots at goal and yet no scoring, what impression wud that give when compared to having one shot at goal that went in.

heh, no harm nor supporting in which ever team. Just a thought that arise out of reading

the league doesnt care how well your team played or how many attempts are converted into goals.

its all about who has the 3points at the end of the day.
and it was us manutd.

now it would be a great embarrasment if the title went away to chelsea yet
again dispite the 12pts lead.

its the year of the fergie!!

Hmm.

Well, not being antagonistic, but having said that... those 17 shots were all within normal playing time.. I know it's very technical, but seriously lah.. where punters are concerned... that match was 0-0, but officially 1-0 to ManU in extra time.

DrumDead tried to be corny/lame:
Liverpool can't beat Man U in the League, at least they still have the BEATles(s).

that is seriously damn lame lah bro. seriously. whats up with that lah

anyway if you took the bookies as a reference point, they guessed this one correctly in terms of the performance. bookies base their odds on facts, not some grand conspiracy theory about how man utd is gonna win the league under crazy circumstances. it was odds on for liverpool to win. they gave a performance to back that up. but they lost, and sadly from a liverpool perspective that is the beauty of football, the way the ball rolls.

if you look from a club/board/shareholder perspective, man utd won a game they could easily have lost, and they deserve every credit for that. in terms of the title race it is a giant leap, not only beating a top4 team but also winning a fixture that chelsea had lost.

but from a fans' point of view, real fans don't support points or trophies. they support their heroes, the style of play and the overall entertainment factor. if they really support points or titles, then i would imagine the premiership table would be more exciting to watch than the match itself.

i'm not trying to flame anybody here, just trying to put things into perspective. but even though the league doesnt care how well a team played, to the fans it matters the most.

and i don't think fergie did anything special, honestly he couldn't have fielded a stronger team, with the exception of evra's horror show (he looked like he was crying after getting subbed. but no beckhams please). we all know that gerrard is liverpool's cutting edge, if he is deployed effectively he can single handedly destroy a team. during the match he was sent to attack evra's flank, which says everything. vidic was ripped apart by bellamy most times (and on occasion gerrard), but in all fairness not many defenders can match his pace. it wasn't rocket science for fergie, as if he had to overturn a huge 3-goal deficit at half time.

having said that, i truly believe that if chelsea can't beat man utd at stamford bridge, they really don't deserve to (and probably won't) win the title. at the moment they are hoping for man utd to drop points. that is not the way of champions

to all pool fans. liverpool played better, but they wasted all their chances. and man utd took their chance and put it to the back of the net. so what if 14 shots on target. not even 1 went in. so.. too bad guys. they were good, but not good enough. the goal scored by man utd was not even luck. to save that free kick is hard as it went high to low. cant blame reina...it was a nice goal..but ya u can blame the stupid defenders of pool not doing anything when oshea was about to take the shot. and fgl, u can change the topic name now. man utd didnt get beaten the crap out of liverpool...HAHA

lol yeah maybe liverpool did play better, but at the end of the day i ask you to question urself and ask if the better team is the one with 17 shots on target or whatever and not even 1 in the back of the net, or 3 shots on target and 1 right in the back top of the net? and that coming from a defensive midfielder without infringing or foul-ing anyone... u tell me man...

i went insane when man utd scored! insanely happy that is

anyway i thought the match was too tight and too tactical. other than some heart attack moments and chances general play wasn't too classy.

and the question i want to ask man utd fans is... or everyone else for that matter

do you think rooney would have still back heeled into the goal if he was onside? im talking about the one on one with reina. he spun around and back heeled... it curled and crept into the goal. i'm still thinking whether he knew he was off before taking the shot. because if it was onside, that would have been the most audacious goal i had ever seen man

if that one was the match winner, i dunno what to say man. dunno if skill or luck or what. maybe i give up soccer and watch tennis or sth

Mancs were lucky and won on a jammy goal. Simple as. Good result for them though.

Makes you think about how far up the league we would be with a top class striker in our ranks.. The inbred cunts played like they were scared of us.. Reminds me of the cup final, but this time they got in a jammy goal. Fair enough, bad finishing for us, think a draw was the fair result though.. Football's a right bastard of a game.

MOTM - Carra

bam u liverpool supporter oso eh?

carra was fantastic. remember the double last-ditch sliding tackles? i think he slid in on ronaldo, then got up and slid in again on rooney. the ultimate no-nonsense brainless english center half. don't think, just clear

rooney's leg looked like it kena a gunshot wound. blood was like squirting out lol

Alonso should have gotten a 2nd yellow and went off with Scholes...he was holding Scholesy's hand! How did the referee not see that?! And the amount of time he let after injury time...goodness...and the Saha foul...that's an absolute penalty! Biased referee.

its not biased referee. it was lousy referee. it was only his 40th premiership game or something. graham poll was unavailable for the match

saha foul was a 50/50. agger stood his ground, saha just threw the ball into nowhere and went into aggers standing leg. the bellamy goal was no doubt offside, but it was impossible for the linesman to see the momo flick-on being behind so many bodies. alonso got shoved in the back at the edge of the box following a corner, that was a clear penalty. larsson made at least 2 blatant dives at the same part of the field, near the center circle. he managed to con the referee the first time but the second the ref did nothing. what does that mean? it should either have been a man u free kick if it was a foul, or a yellow card for larsson if it was a dive. the ref did nothing. the best of all, the linesman flagged for a corner for a straightforward liverpool corner, the ref overruled him and gave a throw. another was when pennant kicked the ball past rio beyond the byline and the ref gave a corner
