well its the usual swee lee practise of overpricing stuff.

They can argue US price + shipping then get that price.
But those amps are made from china!!!
So shipping should be from china not US.

Shouldn't shipping from china to here be less costly or at least the same then shipping from china to the US? Its a rip off id say.

sweelee should take a look at city music whereby stuff made in china are competitve to US or world wide prices. Just compare prices of vox and line 6, with online us prices. Little difference and at times even cheaper.

is the so-cal 50 head available at swee lee? heard a clip of it boosted with an 808 and delivering a solid metal crunch tone, would love to try it out. seemed pretty jcm800ish.

the Epi Valve Jr combo is a really sweet amp. I tried one in London recently, very 3-d sounding, lush, responsive to dynamics, and it makes even the lousiest guitar (and the lousiest player i.e. me) sound pretty decent!!

I dunno how much its gonna cost in Singapore. But if the combo retails for about S$250-300, then i'd definitely consider getting one..

i own a vjr for quite a while. a modded one with attenuator :)

+: plenty of harmonic and sparkle
+: simple control. the sound/tone is very agreeable through out the whole range
+: nice overdrive, rather smooth than aggresive
-: lack of gain stages (2 stage preamp) which means you can't get high gain and useful eq at the same time without modding for extra tubes lol (you can mod to have one of those though)
-: sloppy PCB and not-so-optimised circuit (not sure if they fixed it already)

it's a great starting point towards getting ur hand dirty and mod an amp, plus, it sounds good.
btw, mine is for sale now.

if you refer to the swee lee thread, you'll know... :-)

although there's quite a buzz with the Valve Jr, i feel that the So-CAL is a more interesting amp tone-wise.

I owned a VJr Head and using v30s, and I'm pretty much
in the same camp as JE

However I modded it for more clean volume.
In fact, I modded it quite a lot(tonally) before I got satisfied.

The stock head is very dark, to my ears and breaks up
quite easily especially with humbuckers.

i think its probably nicer with single coils, can get nice
twang and mild tube overdrive. But stock... the low impedance
makes humbuckers sound dark and loaded.

seekz: yup! i almost forget to mention, the vj does sound fabulous with single coil (esp my bill lawrence p-90ish pup) more so then HBs. then again, maybe it's just that my stock epi HBs aren't too fantastic anyway.

ZiiopBoii: i'm using the eminence speaker, to me it's tight low end, aggressive/sparkling treble. it slightly balances the tame nature of the epi head, giving it a bit more edge/bite (a gentle bite, though). i only tried the cab with vjr head. so the comment applied to the vjr only .. lol

JE: U using the Lady Luck speakers? The 4x12??? Where u got it n how much?? Its real Eminence speakers not some designed by Eminence those Lady Luck??
