english superband?

Hmm.

I'm curious: what does "selling out" mean to you guys??

Does it mean:

1. changing your musical direction/image due to record company pressures?

2. completely disregarding your old fan-base for the sake of seemingly better or bigger numbers of fans?

3. anything else..? I'm at a loss for ideas.

But put it this way.. if you're talking about being commercially successful, there have to be certain compromises (let's not throw in the 'Metallica' story here).

I believe as Artistes, they have the right to explore and cover as much ground as they want to. For instance, I completely loved the 1st Darkness album, but when the 2nd album came out, I found myself struggling to understand what the heck they were trying to do.

However, (and only in this case) I tried to put myself in their shoes.. and I realised that their 1st album was the by-product of their live shows before they made it big. I seems that they only wrote the 2nd album in the studio without 'road-testing' those songs.

So, are artistes really 'selling out' or are they just somehow influenced by their surroundings, and hence their eventual output?

Another case in point is the 3rd Led Zeppelin album, which was written in the welsh mountains. Ever wonder why their 3rd album is so.. 'acoustified'? EVeryone didn't get why they took a somewhat different direction, but as artistes they chose their own way.

I suppose as fans we can only step back nad see the big picture and not just criticise or poke holes in the big scheme of things?

back to the question: what IS selling out?

Hmm.

I can't wait for record stores to start being influenced by SOFT threads and put N*SYNC, Backstreet Boys, Westlife, etc etc not under 'top 40'

but...

"Non band, non A Cappella"

I'd personally put them under "a waste of your time".

definitely no. 1

it is a travesty for a band to to play something they can't connect with or pretend to be something they're nt for the sake of $... its the same as completely bullshitting ur original fanbase...

rock n' roll is about freedom... $ plays a shit role in it... as seb bach put it: "you can't be king of the world if your're a slave to the grind"
