EMG Mod:both 18v and 9v possible ?

yup i'll do it soon , jus that i don have the time now.No, i'm not wondering and i will not "go ahead and do it" . i'll send it to a tech 2 have it done and seek his advice b4 hand as well.i'm just hoping 2 get as much info as i can before deciding to do anything. It always better to listen 2 more pple's advise rather den one.

i get edder's part ..which is why i thanked him.and i thnk you as well, PatheinRaindropMoe cos tt's wat the sort of info i'm looking for.:)

ovid's post, on the other hand,seems like more like a tonal thing to me and starting with a "It's a waste of time for electric guitar" is not realli helpful. and yes , one reason i hope 2 mod to 18v is the seemly "improved" clean sound. Seems to me, ovid is telling me there isnt realli any diff from a 9v.I don belive i asked abt this. Correct me if i misunderstand

However, i have noted a number of pple who seem to notice the diff.of cousre there are others who don as well. so i guess its realli all down 2 the whole chain of gears you have.

you guys should listen to Ovid. infidels. :mrgreen:

what Avid mention is that not much tonal difference for guitar compared to basses and there are even 27v mods out there.

for me its no point going the 27v or 18v mod as bandwith(for guitar) got choke thus its like wasting the battery..:)

For fat tone i recommed duncan blackout...its not harsh as compared to emg and the clean tone i hear is much better..

with emg the cleans are slight dirty ..and signal spike here and there ..
yucks hate it ...

it can be done ...just do it !

its done!

ok done the mod.Here is wat i hear with my setup ( TS-7(modded)->Digitech Death Metal->MXR mircoamp->randall RX30 ):

9v= 80s metallica-styled. compressed.

Dirty:lead not well-defined,a lil messy.not tt it is bad. in fact the 18v didnt do the trick when it comes to play thier solos.so it has its use. riffing are simply brutal.mushed up chugga chugga . great for playing songs like 'battery'.

Clean: very .....dead. useless to me.

18v= a lil Zakk wylde-styled but more defined. not longer compressed.

Dirty=leads very well defined. great for fast runs.clarity improved alot.Riffing is kinda of like ...zakk in BLS. Beefy, thick and powerful. In ur face kinda of rhy.great for complex riffing.No longer raw.

Clean=big jump from the 9v.Eq still a lil flat but rather useable now. no longer dead. got tt warmth now in the 85.

Overall,the diff in dirty isnt TT much but how many time do you realise wat jus a lil of sumthing can do to ur tone.Glad i done the mod cos i have use for both volts.

Hope this thread will be a good ref for other who wanna do this mod.

great info however i did not catch what guitar ur using this mod for? :D and i guess if u like using EMGs, u dont go for the cleans newayz

Its a ibanez SZ320MH.For cleans i believe single coil are still the best haha but i onli have 1 guitar so ya..haha win some lose some i guess.But with the 18v mod the clean is pretty useable:) i do play cleans but not so much. dist more of a concern.

did you do a blind test ?

get someone to switch from 18v to 9v and back and forth etc
without telling you which mod it's in and let you play and comment.

sometimes
the difference you hear are programed into your head
and you are hearing what you think 18 or 9 volts shd sound like.

kahuna: yah i did. i used a 25k EMG push-pull pot used for the EMG 89(in case you don noe, the EMG 89 is a humbucker and singlecoil in one, so the pot allows you to swtich).The push pull pot was fixed on the vol knob. no nid pic la haha. the vol knob jus pull out for the 9v, push back in for the 18v. no drill, or any holes.

Rat boy: yah.wat me and bro did is one would play and the other will turn around and just listen while swtiching between them.and ya our guesses were always rite.

remember tt wat has worked for me might not for you.didnt work for some pple over the internet as well.

i believe having a 12" inch speaker and play at loud vol ( vol plays a huge part ) is realli important to hear the diff....and your general setup too. i tested at zen's and there wasnt realli much diff. but when i came back home, diff story :)

The better way to describe an 89 is it can be spitted.
Saying it is both a humbucker and single coil in one pickup is alittle weird... lol...
