Edder's Kustom Kvlt DIY '69 Terecaster

Am contemplating between these 2 pickguards. Or should I just stick with that ugly tortoise shell?

I actually prefer the tortoise shell ones. Somehow the abalone maciam too fancy for a tele. The white one gives a clean/country feel while the black one oozes a darker side - for obvious reasons.

I assume that the f-hole is for aesthetics and there is no functionality built into it right?

if the tortoiseshell that i've got right now is the regular tortoiseshell seen on fender guitars and stuff, i won't even think twice but this one.... i've been ripped lah.

agree with the abalone and its friken expensive but then... it adds some MOJO to it and it matches the abalone inlays. damn.

F-holes on a semihollow tele probably started as a weight reducing option during the seventies when heavy assed ash was used but then i may and can be wrong. Ask around REAL players and they'll tell you it'll sound different when compared to a solid body. I dare say it'll sound different too but for me, I've always been attracted to F-HOLES  and USA Custom Guitars happened to have a batch of em on sale.

Lucky me. I got my FHOLES cheap.

yes chan min, i share the same view.

lets see... if i end up with a gloss finish body I'll buy that abalone, fricken USD60 for a damn pickguard. If it end with a matt finish, tortoiseshell it is.

i vote black abalone. give it that dark sexy mysterious look.

like a femme fatale sorta guitar.

plus black abalone goes with silver/chrome hardware.

Black abalone pickguard bought! Can't resist. Keep looking at it on ebay... gotta get it... gotta get it......

Oiled the neck tonight.

Headstock. Accidentally knock the headstock against the cupboard. Bahh... can't be bothered.

Sand down the body, did some touch up on the stains and sprayed another layer of dull lacquer. I'm buying a can of shiny lacquer tomorrow to continue. Lets make this a kilat-kilat one!

Note: you can use those material edder mentioned from arts friend :D

that video is excellent! it takes out all the trail and error! My next body will be based on this method.

Next time i buy Dylon, I'm going to repack em into those small film canister and label em. No point dissolving the whole pack and store as liquid. Too much space wasted.

anyway the abalone pickguard is here. Lighter than expected but its all good.

I've not been working on this guitar for a few weeks but I'll get back to it soon.
