hey guys..

when did you all start learning economy picking for faster playing? cuz its been 5 months since ive picked up alternative picking and close to mastering it. well, i do pick a few wrong strings here and there....

so is it okay if also learn economy picking even with slow finger speed?

thanks

you have been alternate picking for 5 mths and you are close to mastering it? I think you should review what alternate picking truely is.

For a reference to a standard of what alternate picking is, check out Steve Morse.

Then review yourself on how close you are to perfecting the art.

Anyway, I am an economy picking player. Thru and thru. Nothing wrong with starting young or early. No issues with slow finger speed. Its a technic, not a set of speed guidelines.

Refer to Frank Gambale for a master of economy picking.

Aiyo Vaiyen... why like that? Lol ... even we are damn far from Paul Gilbert loh.. Heh. Anyways.

Yea nothing wrong starting out slow, just get your strokes steady and accurate, speed is not really important when starting out. Just remember to keep steady strokes as you speed up.

isnt alternate picking up and down??? ive been incoporating that picking style in my scale runs instead of the downstroke all the way.

Yep, alternate picking is down up down up, no matter what you are doing... string skipping, moving from string to string, even arppegios. Thats strict alternate picking.

Its pretty cool you know, Gilbert almost NEVER gets any dissing, unlike Vai, Satch or esp Malmy.... He's a great guy who, IMO, went for chops first, then developed his vibrato and phrasing at a later stage...

Then just go head on la, enjoy yourself. Sometimes you don't have to restrict yourself, just do it!

dont frail my boy ... it's a whole learning process throughout ...

i'm still learning alt pick, sweep, shred at my age ... ooh ... and i'm over 40++ ...

nothing wrong with it ... as long as u have the heart, determination ... yes, as phil said ... Just Do It ... dont give up ... :)

\m/ to all musician ...

yeap. he utilises that in arpeggios from hell. econ picking is basically a mix of alt pickg and sweeping.

I'm also confused ...
when u guys do alternative picking, do u all rest ur hands on the other strings? Cos i have seen some video lessons saying that strings should be muted if possible and necessary...
When doing alternative picking on the 5th and 6th strings, its is normal to rest the hands on the body of the guitar? Or totally no contact ...

Hmm . . .

It is definitely not a must to mute the strings while alternate picking.

Some people anchor their pinkies while playing, some other simply float their hands. It's really a matter of personal preference.

it's a matter of personal preference i guess. i like anchoring my pinky on my guitar body, most of th e time resting palm on the other strings when alt pickin 5th and 6th, to prevent clipping.
