economy picking

muting is a tool. PG's aggro style picking is yummy n Marty Friedman does not utilize muting in his shreds. practice all styles.

By getting the technique of economy picking mastered, you will greatly increase your speed and accuracy. It will take some time to master if you have been relying on alternate picking, but, it is completely worth it. I went from playing 600 notes per minute to playing 1300 notes per minute after mastering this skill. This took just one year.

so should i still continue with alternative picking first before moving on to economy??

Paul Gilbert is one funny guy. Watched a japanese guitar variety show with him and Marty Freidman, damn funny show.

haha.. master of sweep picking... lol... watch guitars suck 2... watch for this bald guy... i really this hes a pure master...

fenderrules... i dont think its kind of right when u say u mastered it... i know what u are driving at... but there are many things u can still learn and adopt using ap...
as to ur practice... can u pick cleanly in clean mode... if u can... try it at high gain.... if u can do both clean and spunk... yea.. move on... if not... work on it first... its not as easy as u think...

economy picking is a style guitarists use to sound really fast. like sweep picking, your right hand picks up and down really fast, creating a "sweep" effect in your right hand. combined with your fingerspeed, you will get yourself a killer shred sound which will blow you away... 8)

listen to arpeggios from hell by yngwie malmsteen and you'll know what i mean ;)

to yngwie, economy picking is like peanut butter and jelly to him; he is the ultimate master at economy picking, which i regret not practicing that daily in the place of my alternate picking. so it will take me very very long to master this technique since ive been relying on alternate picking

anyway, guys do you all know any simple riffs, scales which i can start practicing economy picking???

when i started out, i didn't worry too much about how i pick, the more important thing for me was to get my ideas across. subsequently, when i'm more proficient, i made up some picking patterns to employ lesser movements, otherwise known as economy picking. this was when i discovered sweep picking- quite accidentally actually 8)

that is so cool 8O

michael angelo batio once said in an instructional video, "why restrict urself to a certain picking style?" i tink he's rite. as in, y shud u do "strict" alt picking? true dat u got to get the technique right. so long as one can play at a reasonable speed in clean mode using alt pickin den i guess de person has "grasped" the technique. NOT master. heh.

yeah. anw, i tink dat we shudnt try and be like paul gilbert in terms of "alt pickin" or stuff. we shud set him as a role model or example on hw we shud go abt doin it(alt pickin). ultimately i tink dat each of us have our own style of pickin(be it economy, hybrid, alt) .

one thing though, getting a certain pickin technique right would ensure u progress steadily in terms of ur guitar skills and u wont just b stuck on a "plateau". :)

PS : i personally use a hybrid of economy, alternate and alternative. :)

Just something here; when I first started learning how to play, my teacher taught me economy picking(actually alternate picking and sweep picking, but it somehow ended up as economy picking), and after a few months it's just, how I play.

Just kinda like, turn it from something you have to do manually into instinct. Bits of Malmsteen's songs were damn useful, even if played slowly. Just gradually get faster, that's all.

I believe that it is best to use economy picking whenever possible with one exception. When play jazz, alternate picking is better. This is because in jazz, the accents fall in a way that up-strokes work better for. Why would you want to make things harder for yourself?

for me presently, i try to pick with e least distance possible, so dat its more efficient, less time needed to go up & down...i pick e way i'm comfortable with, & if i cant get sth up 2 speed, den i do economy, see which is e fastest way to play e most number of notes haha...
