Dunlop Crybaby Classic

It's whether you want to give a person fish or you want to teach a person how to fish. And whether you want to be a donor for fish or you want to start a fishing club.

As people who have stayed in this forum for long, sure, they have feelings too. Newbies aren't the only type of humans around. Asking for fish suppresses the potential of the forum to go up a higher level. Again, like I say, the problem is multi-faceted.

exactly, so i say teach ppl how to fish, as u suggested. tell them to go search for the dealers and find out prices on their own. Don't find out for them and give them the prices on a silver platter.

I understand that lao jiaos are humans with feelings as well, but if u feel like a thread isn't worth the time, then why bother clicking on it again after the first time? It's not as if lao jiaos are coerced to participate or give answers. If the Qs are beneath you, leave it to someone who is less atas to share their knowledge. There will be irritant newbies, but they do not make up the vast majority.

I fail to comprehend how having some threads where newbies ask baby Qs can stymie the development of higher levels of discussion in a forum. There will always be threads involving intriguing discussions on stuff that's beyond newbies. If the majority of threads in a forum are abt newbies asking you to fish for them, then what you say could be true. Even then, there's no limit to the no. of threads you can start in a day, so if anyone has more interesting things to discuss, he/she is free to raise them in new threads.

There is a time and space for everything, it just takes a bit of patience and tolerance.

I think its best to just point them in the right direction rather than lambasting them outta here.

Everyone would face such a problem as well, not only in forums, but in life.

Ever got lost and ask for directions?
People could have asked u to take a cab from wherever you were and not help you.

But most help if they could.

Like I said, sweelee is supposed to be the distributor in SG, call them up and ask if they have stock.

Like I said, it's a multi-faceted problem, which I have REPEATED so many times. It's not only a Newbie vs Laojiao problem, there's also a structural problem involved. But to reply to your comments.

1. Why should a newbie come in, demand information, and then not reply to his thread? Very frustrating. You don't even know if you helped him. Should there be limits to such hit and run?
2. If you spend your time reading pointless posts, should you be happy? Or should you stop reading? Or maybe we should segregate the forums out? It sure is as tiring for experienced people to read newbie threads, sometimes to the point of utter ridiculousness (asking questions about Sweelee when Sweelee phone number is just around the corner).
3. I won't argue about the opinions - you have yours and I have mine. Opinions matter as much or as little to different people in different contexts. But do consider why SOFT has such a high attrition rate - there's over 10K of registered users but less than 2% participating in the forums nowadays. Is it because SOFT has lost its value over time, or are unable to sustain its value when users transition from one point to another?
4. Teaching people to fish has been done before. However, if someone else chooses to give a fish, then what? If you look objectively, penta-tonic is telling the threadstarter to learn how to fish. Although not in a very friendly manner.

And to be honest, comparing SD forum, TGP and SOFT, there're just so many more "bad newbies" here than there. Sure, I don't have statistics for it. Go over there, hang out a bit, see if I'm correct.

thor's point on the attrition rate is true. Moreso for the level of information discussed vs the vol. of information exchanged in this forum, it isn't growing the way it should be.

Now i know there will be ppl out there getting ready to ask, 'so what do you think should everyone do so that it can progress since you're so good'.

It has come to the point that some of us have liken it to Seriously Obstinate F*ck-Tards forum.

I've always found entertainment in reading this type of forums... one guy comes in, asks for the world, then finally no response... so typical.

welcome to the club then kentheman2000  You've displayed a prime example of what you have said, walk the talk indeed :prayer:

He didn't ask for the world, just just mainly asked for some help.

I think this question is quite straight forward, some of us don't have the time because of work or other constraints to drop by showroom after showroom, shop after shop to search for a particular item.

So we ask where we can search for a particular item and roughly how much it would cost.

This is to allow the buyer to know if he has enough cash then he can go down there and buy. Else it would be a wasted trip if he made the trip down and did not have enough money.

And we have answered him, I have early on to told him " I think sweelee has "

I am not sure of the price, but at least that points him to the right direction.

There is no need to flame him or anything.
A forum is where we have discussions and seek/offer help and other constructive comments.

Hmm.

IMO this whole thing sheds light on the "which burger should I get issue".. not exactly the same ball game, but still within the same ball-park if you get what I mean.

So what can softies do? Are we simply not going to give answers, and in that process force newbies / people urgently looking for an item but don't have the resources at their fingertips to perform a "search"...?

Or would it be easier for everyone to avoid this pointless debate of "whether we should answer properly or not" by just giving a simple answer?

Granted information is pretty much laid out online (yeah hor if he can come soft... why cannot just go google and just type 'swee lee'), but I think regardless of whether people ask cliched/noobish/boring questions or not...

We retain our own personal right NOT to give an answer if we feel that the question is not worth answering.

After all, who says a question needs to be answered? Were majority of the replies given in this thread to the point or even partially in answer to the initial question?

I think we should all learn when to give a reply and when not to. That's just how I feel and anyone can disagree.

Peace.

So.... why... can't he call and get the information from the horse's mouth?

Where do we draw the line? Or maybe we shouldn't draw the line?

How long before help becomes spoon-feeding? How to make people a little more independant and, hopefully, more suited to life itself?

Hmm.

^^ shredcow, well despite the admittedly fuzzy message I was trying to put across, my personal opinion is that if we feel that he could get that information all by himself.. then we can and maybe should refrain from replying since he ought to do a google search.

Either that, OR we could just nudge him but still not give a full-blown answer and point him in the right direction.

To answer why call , mainly is because he would want to count on forumer's experience.

Like recommendations.

For example, if I were to ask this question, I would be hoping maybe to get a few locations and the price.

Then based on this I can then find out a balance where price and which shop is most convenient for me then I'd give them a call.

We don't have to give an answer if we don't want to, but a forum is a place to seek discussion.

You know what? Maybe that person is not even local, and would be visiting singapore soon. And then wanna see if there's a place where he can get something and at what price.

I think we should be more helpful anyhow, cause one day I don't think I'd like to be on the receiving end of some " go search it yourself " attitude.

Especially when its 3am in the morning when all shops are closed.
Not to mention many shops online don't state prices.

The list of brands/shops are on the Kopitiam section, and I'll concur that it does not seem to be immediately reflective. I'll copy paste the thread over, and if anyone asks again, please shoot them then.

"Which burger should I get" isn't just going to go away if you answer the question.

I don't think one would ever be urgent enough to get a piece of gear, to be honest. Since when was a pedal a life-saving device? I simply don't buy that.

You guts have noted the gist: a forum is where we have discussions and seek/offer help and other constructive comments.

Where information flows, it has to be two-way, not one, for a forum to improve.

Yes it can be two way, but must we always expect something back?

By asking a price, he is merely shopping around as well.

And maybe someone might reply saying " Hey i got a used one you can have at $XX dollars " or " i saw one in the papers selling at $XX "

I'm not saying this is always the case, but maybe the person has NO experience of any shops in singapore.

I had no idea G77 was in singapore, or mrmisse was around.

Until I read forums and asked for help.

Especially when its 3am in the morning when all shops are closed.

There was a recent dude who did that.

2am or something.

Create thread to ask for help. Posted again a few minutes or 30 mins later to bump the thread.

Funny fella who really needed the gear answer right there and then...
