hey bros

I have a Duncan JB fitted in the bridge position of my guitar; and yet somehow I feel it lacks clarity in distortion - especially so when playing open chords.

Is it that JBs are like that, or possibly the pickup does not gel well with my amp? I'm running it thru a Marshall MG15 onboard distortion.

The MG series are not synonymous with clarity. I find the drive channel to be muddy. But to be fair, I don't know how much clarity you are looking for with distortion but you can try rolling the volume on your guitar when you are playing open chords. It wont be clear. Just not as muddy.

do u have the same problem away from home? like when u go jamming?

yeah sadly i'd suspect its the amp. a fine example that changing pickups wont do much good as much as a change of amp. no offence to you though.. :)

Adjust the pickup height. Google what pickup height adjustments do to your sound.

Watch the gain channel on the amp - there should be some suggested settings that come with it. Use them first. Don't choke the gain and don't go to extremes with the eq yet.

Dudelove : haha I didnt change the pups, they were stock! heh, the '59 sounds beautiful, but the drive was muddy!

Shredcow: yes i've realised the pickup height was level with the neck one! could be the problem!

because i ran a fender HSS into the amp and there was optimum clarity in with some back in black :D

the JB is known to be one of the best bridge pickups for cutting through a band mix under high gain..

i think it may be the sound of your drive channel that you are not satisfied with, rather than the pickup itself?

Its possible! there was much clarity in picking of individual strings - just the strumming is sort of drowned in distortion - then again, might be a sign for upgrade! :D probably going for the AC4 this time round..

try this...

Drive at 11 - 12 oclock
Treble at 9 - 10 oclock
Mids at 11 oclock
Bass at 2 oclock
FDD on

Go for the lower settings first.
