Dry Fretboards.

Guys! Help needed!!

I know lemon oil is just more or less for cleaning and I have been using that to clean the fretboard on my guitars.

But I need something for a dry fretboard. I've read that linseed oil works but where can I get those? Or would there be any other wood products that works as well?

Nah, need something that really 'feeds' the wood.. Lemon oil seems more of just a cleaner.

Lol Nic, 2-4 hours??? If I do clean it its 3-5mins max man!

i think the problem is you ...not the fret board :) ...come ..on smile !!

i usually dab dab then wipe after 20 sec ....btw is your fret board laquer coated ????

yes- lemon oil is a conditioner. however, you can acquire general wood conditioner at hardware shops (eg: selfix) which actually does the job better, currently using this:

guitar shops also has this to offer:

But if you leave the lemon oil on the fretboard until it dries, will there be any problem? As in leave for like 5-6 hours?

Some quotes taken from here

Not as well and long term use can be harmful to the fretboard

Lemon oil is acidic, so in the long term it will dry things out and possibly corrode the frets if you use it alot

I was advised by my guitar repairers (Graham Noden Workshops on Denmark Street), that prolonged use of Lemon oil softens the wood. It then makes a refret impossible.
Their advice was that Lemon oil was a strict no-no.

You should only use lemon oil once per 6 months.. I think I heard that a very long time ago

I dont even do it that much. Once a year is fine, unless the guitar is sitting in the sun and the wood is drying out. Using too much oil can be bad for fretboards. It may loosen frets in the long run and/or prevent fret glue from holding frets in place. It may also make the wood work loose from the neck wood since most fretboards are capped. When you oil the fretboard, the wood absorbs the oil, but the neck wood does not. When wood absorbs oil, it expands causing the neck to bow back so if your fretboard is absording a lot of oil it would be safe to say you need to tweak you truss rod.

Quite a first I heard lemon oil dries things up. Maybe thats why they advise to use it in moderation?

As with many other things in life, use in moderation.

I'm also using a wood-conditioner I purchased from Homefix, much cheaper and works better in comparison to commercial 'specialised' guitar wood-conditioners.
