Drumheads

I have got a Tony Smith drum set, and they sounded really horrible, especially the snare.

Was thinking of getting the highly raved Evans G2...

Anyone know which particular shop sells them?

P.s. any heads that are better than the Evans G2?

All comments are appreciated.. thanks!

There arent any "better" heads out there. Just heads that you prefer. What kind of sound are you looking for? There are heads that brings out the tone/attack/warmth and even heads that help you to control the resonance. Heads are all different. Different thickness, whether coated or non-coated and some are even weaved together.

If you're interested in Evans, you could check out their website at http://www.evansdrumheads.com/ as they have sound profiles for the different heads they offer.

For G2s clear or coated, you could get them either at Ranking at Bras Basah or Yamaha outlets. Swee Lee carries Remo, Drum Resources carries Aquarian and The Music Lab carries Attack Drumheads.

If you're unsure on what to get, you could always try different heads from different brands and eventually, you'll settle on a set of heads you prefer best!

Thanks for the reply.

I replaced the snare heads with the the G2 coated. Being new to drums or tuning, i couldnt get the sound that i wanted.

By the way, whenever, i hit the drums, i couldn't hear the snare wires ringing. Despite tightening the snare wires knob, it's doesn't much help..

what do i do with it?

THANKS

What do you mean you couldn't hear the snare wires ringing?

Could it be that the snare wires are too tight? If it's tightened too tightly, it will choke the snare. Loosen it slightly and let the snares vibrate on the batter head. Perhaps, it might be your tuning too? Disengage the snares and tune the drum to how you would want it to sound like (your preferred pitch and amount of ring) and then adjust the tension of your snares!

correction. i could hear the snare wires ringing whenever i hit the drums. is the ringing sound unavoidable?

TIA

Im not very good at tuning the snare myself but the method I use to cut away the ring is to tune the resonant head to medium tension and the crank the batter head all the way up. It gives the snare a very focused high pitched tone with a much controlled ring to almost no ring at all. I personally prefer a much lower pitched snare but I have no idea how to get rid of the ring naturally so what I would do is tune the snare to how I would want it to sound like and use a piece of moongel to control the ring.

Play around with tuning and you'll find your sweet spot!
