Drum skins for a weird situation

My church just approved my proposal to change skin, but right now i am not sure what to choose.

The situation is that the drum is place within a drumshield without the top covering, micing is only with the condensor mic placed above the drummer which is now hardly used because drums are pretty much loud enough. My church aint really going for the loud music sort of thing. So i really not sure whether focus or ringing out would be better.

just hoping you guys can share you experience and maybe suggest skin choices for me. btw if possible lets just stick to evans and remo. Thanks

I don't know, but I think it really boils down to how big your sanctuary is and also the acoustics of your sanctuary. Also, roughly what budget the church has set aside for you.

Ya, I agree with Jeepers. Are all your drummers hard hitters? If without mics your drums are already loud, I suggest any of the double-ply skins -- Evans Hydraulic, or Remo Pinstripe.

But if you and/or the other drummers have good and sensitive touch, then I suggest, Evans EC-2, cuz they are quite easy to tune and really make the drums sing without too much effort. The special thing about EC-2's is there is a silver "dampener" on the edge of the skin near the bearing edges, hence the skin is called, Edge Control (EC). This silver thing, minimises the overtones, so you don't have to paste ugly tissues and masking tape, or use Remo Rings, or MoonGels.

But EC-'s are quite hard to get from Ranking or Yamaha, cuz it depends when they order and stock them. I always buy they when I see them, even when I don't need them! LOL!

I agree with Beboptang's recommendation of skins.

I use EC2s batters on all my toms (Beboptang: That's why I don't use Moongel, hah!). Reubs, you could drop by one day and try them out. I dare say you'd be thoroughly impressed! :) Frummer uses EC2s as well, i think.

And yup, I'm not too pleased with the availability of EC2 skins in Ranking and Yamaha, especially for the bigger toms (ie. 14" 16"). You can find EC2s at Music Theme, situated in the basement of Excelsior Shopping centre near Maestro Guitars. Please note that Music Theme's pricing on their items are slightly higher than both Ranking and Yamaha.

OT; Beboptang: What skins are you using on the resonant side of your toms and how do they complement the EC2s?

Jeepers: Haha! I use MoonGels on crappy old skins or on crappy drums with bad bearing edges -- quick fix lor ;) For reso heads on my Ludwigs, believe it or not, the original reso head that came with the Ludwigs -- which I bought in 1995 -- are still good. The heads are printed Ludwig Ensemble. Dunno who makes 'em

All: Nigel's expecting some shipment of EC-2's in the near future, check it out with him ya?

Beboptang: Hahaha I see! Heh 1995? Damn! I didn't even know what drums were then! I think those heads were either made by Ludwig themselves, or by Remo. I'm using Evans Genera resonant heads, not entirely satisfied with how they work with the EC2s but I guess they'll just have to do for now.

And thanks for the heads up on the EC2s!

Resonant Drum Heads

Jeepers: To be honest, I've never paid much attention to the reso head of drums. When I'm asked to tune church drums, I usually only replace the reso head if they are dented, old & dusty until cannot stretch, or if people stick all manner of sticky tape on it. And I usually use Remo Ambassador's cuz it's so hard to find Diplomats.

Anybody has any thoughts about reso heads?

Evans EC2

i think Nigel indeed have some EC2 available..though I can't remember what sizes he has left...can call him to check out if wanna buy...

Ya, I saw them. I think he had 10", 12" & 14" all coated EC2's, but he said those were his personal pieces. So he's waiting for his shipment to come in.
