But you still can't play a formal gig wearing a suit with your foot bare can you? Haha...

haha. woah. looks really cool eh the poster. never knew what was a flying dragon.

but if play barefoot people also cannot see ma, hidden right?

i personally believe that the music is more important and if i will have to go barefoot then i should haha even in a hotel setting. but yet again, it will take like another century before i get the chance to play in a hotel haha

wear a suit and nice shoes, but after sitting on the throne, take off the shoes and put them one side .

and either wear black socks or spray paint your feet black 8O

Who says your foot will be hidden? The hi-hat foot is usually exposed. And melvin...its not your choice whether to play barefooted or not in a hotel...dress code is set by the people who hire you...they won't give a crap about how your music suffers.

Also, it is possible to play well with shoes. I'm comfortable playing with shoes and most top players play with shoes too...its just getting used to it. Besides, I remembered when I used to practice barefooted 4-5hrs a day, the joints on my big toe used to hurt from the hours of impact. Shoes will help to absorb a whole lot of shock....it is a good thing really.

hey alvin bro (and all the others here), i have a little question to ask you.

izzit true that practicing using air drumming = no use at all?

well, to be honest (trying not to be shy here, just throw it all out, haha) i took up drums about slightly less than a year ago, but i dun feel any improvements, especially timing and stuff. Even worst i feel like i'm deproving. and its really really discouraging. The simple beats, and simple timing i can do, but i dun feel any improvement at all.

I don't have a drumset at home (lack of space & $$). Thus the only time i'm practicing is either air-drumming at home with my sticks, and jamming time (which we play songs). Recently got this pedal and have been practicing at home, although i know its a little too quick to say, but i feel like when i'm jamming, i can't play the double pedal well enough at all.

-Should i start all over again from the basics?
-Get a drumset?
-how exactly to keep time? (i know the importance of the drummer as a time keeper)
-Or should i just quit it once and for all because i have no talent.

Rather long post, but need some help from all you bros.

dude.. someone shud really tell you how much you improved since the start...

from the start when i joined ya jamming session, you were like totally off... look at how much you improve, at least now you can play a whole song in sync wif ya band....

anyway i believe air drumming helps... especially for me i always air drum everywhere.. it helps me when i get on the real set to know what i m going to play exactly.. and also let my creative juices flow... den try it on real drumset to see how the real sound is.... though sometimes it sounds like crap lah!

anyway just keep practicing.. get a metronome.. play to click tracks...

rengaw: chill out bro. u improve most when u dont realize u are improving. heh. it takes time bro. nobody learn straight 16ths on the bass drum overnight.. it took me 2 months just to get my feet to do alternating L R L R smoothly at like, 100 bpm

btw i dont air drums, but i think about playing and visualizing myself on the kit. everytime i listen to my songs on busrides, i would visualize myself playing the drums, and my index fingers are the sticks. hahaha

slowly bro. u can do it. it takes time.

PS: eat and live drums!!

Reuben : Thank you so much. =) I don't know what else to say.

And i know this sounds cheesy (and mushy) but what you all (bro chud & all) said did give me back some confidence. I think one problem (i noticed) is i drum with very little confidence. Every time after jamming i get really depressed, cos i dun feel confident at all.

Anyway guys, 1 small little question again (SORRY!)
To improve my consistency is to practice with metronome?
As in i practice for eg, 150 bpm, and i remember how fast 150bpm is?

How else to improve my consistency?
-Get all the basics to the top notch first before doing fanciful stuffs?

Hey, I used to air-drum when I first started out. It does help in some things such as basic coordination, visualisation of a groove etc. However, it does not help much in terms of feel, touch, dynamics and technique.

For example, you may be able to learn the coordination work for a certain groove, but because you don't practice on an actual kit, your detail in "time" will suffer. A good example is the foot pedal. When air-drumming, your foot impacts the floor without resistance. On the drumset, there is the pedal board angle and weight, spring tension to work around. So your bass drum note placement may be inaccurate (may be a little late or early).

The answer is definitely not to quit drumming! Keep persisting! Work & save up for a drum kit! When you persist, you improve and when you improve you will gain some confidence...everything is related in some ways.

Time consistency comes with metrnome practice! Very importantly, must practice through different tempos.

If you think you have hit a brick wall and is not improving as fast as you want (like what happened to me when I was 17)....get hold of a teacher! It helps!

Good luck!

Alvin : Yeah, man all the faults u listed out, and all the things i feel i lack are spot on. I will heed your advice and save up for a drum kit.
Thank you so much! :D

Rengaw,

Air drumming helped me out when I was working on my independence. Independence is one of the more difficult things to master and I try work on it whenever I'm off the kit by air drumming and it has helped me plenty.
