Does playing contemporary affect your classical technique?

I've heard lots of stuff about when one plays contemporary , your classical technique gets affected.

How true is it?

I just started playing keyboard in my church and of course I employ contemporary styles of playing.

Since I just started playing contemporary I can't say for sure in what way has my classical technique been affected but so far it seems as if my classical techniques are unaffected....at least for now.

Can there be a balance of managing both contemporary and classical techniques at the same time?

hmm.. i guess it will not be affected.. in fact, 2 of my classmates are learning both at the same time.. it depends on how you manage.. :)

Hi =)

i'm a classical pianist, but at the same time now a keyboardist and jazz pianist.

YES, it'll be affected....

lucky for me is that I've finished my classical piano training before i jump to keyboard and jazz. So the damage is minimal, at least i can still go back and perform for recital because i know what will be different and how i need to do it.

Technique wise, it's different in terms of touch. Pop piano usually have a softer touch, and jazz has a very distinct touch, and your pop playing can easily seep into your classical playing and u'll hear your teacher scold you all the time because of it (if ur teacher is good enough to differentiate tough)

The only remedy here, is to realize the difference and actually try to do something about it, play like how u do classically for classical, and play more poply for pop (notice so many people say,
"ah .. this pianist when he try play pop .. he so classical) ..... =)

for style wise, it is also affected ... cuz the style is so different...

for me .. the only thing is .... i'll be bored playing classical music by it is and will jazz it up and play it to whatever style i like .... =P .....

hope it helps ......

Well just a little background , I'm just playing major/minor chords using chord voicing method coupled with simple conventional rhythems. I do change my rhythems once in a while depending on the mood of the song that the band is playing but nothing fanciful of course. I'll throw in a couple of apggaegios once in a while and I think that should be it for now.

Hope that won't affect my classical technique so much.

I agree with you Piano_ex with regards to the world of a difference in touch between classical and contemporary. By the way , I thought pop piano was supposed to be mostly loud? hahahahaha.....

I guess(at least to me) it's kind of taboo to have your pop piano touch seep into your classical touch but won't it be awesome if you had your classical touch seep into your pop piano touch? Can go serade all the girls lah.... 8)

ahahaha ... =)

both ways won't do ....

for pop, it's mainly soft if it's lounge piano playing, except when u're playing rock piano or blues piano i guess? hahah

classical touch is not good for pop though .... it sounds .... rigid? is it the right word? :P

i think play pop still not so bad. play jazz will kill all classical training.

Yes, it will affect. And it's noticeable as well. Way I do it - make sure you keep practising classical.

=)

man .. i have to accompany my friend for an erhu recital in october ... and the piece is soo complex and difficult .... hmm ... i think, i betta start practice now ... not much time everyday .... hahaaha =P
