Do you feel a sense of ownership and responsibility for Singapore's future?

thats only half true, they might as well hire mainland chinese. Well actually they do hire mainland chinese, but not all the time. Some jobs can never be taken by foreigners.

And in some areas, Singaporeans, Singapore students will always own the foreigners, thats how its is in the arts and social sciences , in the past, in the present and in the future.

Your degree - from what university, honors or not, it matters alot. You ask local uni grads, the difference between a 2nd upper honors and a 2nd lower honors has tremendous implications on your employability, salary and promotion.

bro hifi-killer... borrow your quote.
knn... this is true...because you cant get 2nd upper n it affect your promo, instead of your performances..
those shitty HR grading system.

companies nowadays don't hire based on how "prestigious" your degree is. they hire based on how cheap your salary is.

when you say reserve "some" place for singaporeans it's saying not all places are for singaporeans, which means there are singaporeans who can't get into local U because the places are taken up by non-singaporeans.

Studied so high education end up foreigners took your positions .. competitions no negotiations .. the foreigners offered so cheap salary to company ..end up depressions ..

oh we already used the foreigners for our 12 outlets they can't KENG, caused we had cc camera from home watching them all time he he he .. sophisticated .. hmm.. nice to bully them. they r all China girls . he he he..

Back on topic, I agree it's not all about your money. And to be honest, Singaporeans have one of the lowest median incomes in the world, like 17th position or something, and in that list(those above them), it was the only one where the average median income was below GDP. Our cost of living is extremely high. The government just increased overnight parking charges by 100% and no one says anything. That's just 1 example. In the end you'll just be working and working to keep up with the rising costs. I don't see any happiness in that.

@Vaiyen: Yes exactly. When we see the folly of our utterly temporal ways (which will probably be quite late in life), then only will we understand that happiness is easily attainable by the simple things in life.

no1 say anything or no1 can do anything abt it anyway?? govt is trying to increase the cost of owning a car (via ERP) since there are too many ppl congesting our roads but everyone just cont to buy car like free lidat. so now include other measures like this lor. simple as that.

everyone don cont to buy car, but replacing their current one?
so how can their be more n more cars?? if there's more cars, it's isnt owned by singaporeans.. but by
FT/PR, n i think logically they should pay high road tax, ERP etc than singaporean.

a few days ago, the straits times headlined 'highest employment rate since 1991' . Today , PM says social security net will be strengthen.

Looks good for Singaporeans? Or is it because elections are round the corner?

more and more good news will come before election. MM Lee recently announced that we can expect some "goodies" in next years budget...

Maybe government can employ other methods like making the 2nd car and 3rd car purchased to be even more expensive than the first, so as to curb the same family owning 2 or 3 cars? I'm just giving one example, to me increasing the prices of parking and ERP is just a lazy way of solving a problem. Well that's not the point anyway, my point was, that the cost of living here is high.

Don't be too happy. Because after the election, the PAP govt will take that so-called "goodies" away from you in many ways and many folds....just like the last election....and the last....and the.... :(

employment rate is high but you must remember that there is no minimum wage in singapore. many of people still earning shit.

the labour chief has argued that a minimum wage policy will make workers worse off. but this depends on the market clearing rate. what the market clearing rate is, we don't know, there is no transparency nor any apparent incentive to being transparent.

the definition of being employed is also shady - if i'm not mistaken a part time worker is considered employed, the definition of which is one who works a mere 5 hours a week. similarly, we don't know how the unemployed is derived.

increase in income is nominal, 4% which is eroded by 3% inflation, so real rise is income is only 1%. why is inflation so high? if i'm not mistaken we have had positive inflation throughout the entire recession and beyond - can anyone confirm?

it was also nice that the papers recently reported an impressive increase in tax revenue in a separate article.

the bottom line is that the government has a budget surplus, which means they are taxing more than they can spend. when the people are taxed it erodes their wealth.

so when PM says that the budget promises 'goodies' for people, it is on the often disguised pretense that they were already made poorer by taxes. the government has credited taxes before (gst credits), but bear in mind that while tax erodes one's permanent income, these credits take the form of sporadic bonuses, which have implications on the welfare of the people.

at the end of the day i guess the government does what it does. but the way the press selects information to disseminate, possibly taking the data out of context, is irresponsible to say the least. furthermore, anything negative is always scrutinized to no end, while the positives are always blown out of proportion - this is clear prejudice.

so do you feel a sense of ownership and responsibility?

frankly i think the country the turn out the way it will, regardless of whether you will it or not, whether you are happy about it or not. so the answer is no.

Our government is still overall good. Could be better, but in comparison to the rest of the world, i would say PAP is top class.

Just look north of Singapore. Or south-west. Glad i'm not there.

There are ways to reap benefits from living in Singapore. Just that too few of us realise how.

i think u're wrong...there are quite a few families nowadays who are getting pretty rich. one car for dad, one for mum, one for son to go pick up girls, and one for daughter. so obviously there will be more cars right??the foreigners are pretty much the opp from what i observe. they car pool. 20 of them squeeze into one lorry. they definitely do not take up as much road space as us. ok granted there will be some richer ft/pr ard but i've yet to see/hear off one that owns more than one car...

=bf0502tr

we look at 80% of sg living in HDB, how many are being described like what you said?? discounting away red plates.. all i see in my neighourhood of 4 to 5 rm flats... each household typically only owns 1 car,..
COE is raising, car salesman are converting to sell used car.. so is new car biz still selling well? and even if those, that you said each members own 1 car, how many such cases do we encountered?? foreigners.... obviously not refering to those living in kaki bukit worker squarters, those foreginers that is moving up the PMET ladders.

What i observe is: Many better-off households (including expats) have 2 cars-one for dad, one for mum. Kids generally borrow one or the other. Some have three tops.
THe rest, have 1 car, or none. Hell, even if you have 23 cars, you can only drive one at a time. I'm having hols, working as intern at IBP. and quite a few expats do take public transport to work. Those who drive are about 3:1 local:expats. So it's not the foreigners, but rather our own people who are taking up more road space.
How to stop this? Raising road tax/coe confirm is useful. THe rich people who already have 23 cars still can afford, so they buy, but at the same time, they are still driving one out only. The folks who aren't so well off, they won't be able to afford the car, thus, one LESS car on the road...
Course, if you want a car, singapore's just about the worst place to own one. COE, ERP, plus crazy high markups. Don't forget to add crazy parking charges, jams which drain your petrol etc.

That's why I'm taking my 2B license now. Sick of getting squashed like a sardine, and wait 15 - 20 minutes for a bus(eg. Bus 52). Our supposed world class public transport system provider still dare to write 15 - 20mins for wait time on their board. Might as well put a picture of a middle finger there.
