Do you call it a Strat if it's not a Fender/Squier ?

I remember when I relied to a fellow guitarist that I really like Strat sound and asking him why he doesn't have one and he was like "My Tyler's also a Strat"

really??!? :P

Overpriced Strato COPY!! hahah! Tyler, Suhr... etc... still a strat copy to me.

If I need a Strat, I'd buy a Fender and if LesPaul body, then a Gibson it is....

if i need a car, ill buy a ford. lamborghini, aston, koenigsegg are still car copies. over priced car copies.
hmm, dont need to slam the prices of some guitars if u cant afford them hey.

If a cheaper guitar can do the job, why pay more just for the boutique label... that's why ultimately I don't see myself buying a Suhr, Tyler, etc. A Fender does it well enough. I'd pick a Fender over any of those anyday.

Hmmmm the first thought that crossed my mind was 'Is there a need to be so politically correct?' Not trying to flame anyone here, but i feel that the examples used earlier (Panadol and Tupperware) pretty much stated why many guitarists are calling LP-shaped guitars or Strat or Tele-shaped by the name. For me, i usually err on the side of caution, if i'm talking to a friend who knows exactly what i mean, i'll just use the generic copyrighted name. However, in the presence of strangers or new acquaintances, i'd use the proper terms (strat-copy etc.) I think its important to inform the newbies about this, but among us more experienced musicians, i'd say there isn't a pressing need to be so politically correct. Cheers all!

It's not a big deal for me, either. It's just a habit of mine to call strat copies as they are. :) Also, if a strat copy offers more than a typical strat (e.g. Swing Prism) or has something different from a typical strat, I wouldn't want to call it a strat either.

Pretty much this.

I think a proper term for those overpriced guitars such as Tyler for example is still 'Strat-Copy'. Sad for some tone cork sniffers freaks here but IT IS true... :D Just buy the 'real thing' then upgrade it if you want to... simple as it is.

In my opinion, strat should only be a name for fender. For the copies, they are just 'strat-copy'. But anyway.. The brand doesn't really matter i guess. What matters is the quality of the guitar =)

a name is still required to identify the shape.

personally i'd still call the respective shapes strat and lp. it's like typing u instead of you, it's not right, but it's understood by all

oh so now we are on to calling names? nah, no point buying the 'real' thing if its a piece of shit. i mean, whats the point of buying something and upgrading, id rather buy something i dont have to upgrade at all. and id rather be a cork sniffer than a cock sucker lapping up leos balls.

Butt hurt dude? :)

relax... take it easy... drink your milk and medicine, it will help you a lot to calm down.

I'm not quoting your message but it seems that you keep on responding with mine... So if you want to buy those 10K tyler, suhr guitars then BY ALL MEANS BUY IT. ... it's your money anyways... I'm just chiming in to this thread and giving my point of view.... for me, I'll go with the 'real thing' but oh well.. it's just me...

hehe, why is it so hard for geetarers to talk sense without putting down another, in the pretext of airing own opinions.

even though its a general statement, somehow its still targeting a certain group in here aint it..

For every action, theres a reaction. Without action, how do others react...

it might be hard to digest, but some copies are better than their respective originals. but whether they are worth the money, that depends on the buyer's judgement.

True. But i think Suhrs, Tom Andersons, Tylers, Don Groshs sound better than Fender. The only difference is the price, and one has to gauge whether it is worth that amount.

while we're at it, you can give a lousy driver a bugatti veyron, but it doesn't mean he will win a better driver driving a nissan gt-r (20 times cheaper) in a race..

linking with the topic, it doesn't matter whether one plays a fender stratocaster or a superior/inferior strat copy of another brand. if one's playing is substandard, the brand "Fender" on the headsock ain't gonna do anything to cover that fact up. it's natural that the more expensive the gear, the more people will expect from the player, lest the player wants the audience to call him poseur / rich noob and other assortments of negative names.

it's like, a driver driving a Lamborghini as if he passed his driving test a week ago, pai seh or not? O_o lol

My suggestion... Convert to POLL!!! the question is straight forward Will You or Will You Not;

Yes or No; Sometimes means Yes, Once in a while means Yes, Consenting others calling non Fender/Squiers strat means Yes. Buying from Buy/Sell a guitar labelled as Strat when it is not a Fender/Squier means Yes.

No is simply No! Not Once, Not Ever! - (ok, if it was done before enlightenment, and has not been repeated since... forgivable) hehehe
