Do you actually use the Overdrive channel??

Hmm.. sorry guys... just some clarification...

We all use pedals right? I always go into the clean channels of marshalls with a sansamp GT2, bypassing the Overdrive/ distortion channel. I suppose that's the norm?

If our pedals go through the Overdrive or distortion circuits of any guitar amps, suppose that the sound will be all hell breaks loose? And also when we need clean sound we just have to step the pedal again. Much simpler isn't it. Thus isn't the overdrive/ distortion channel underused??

Pros like Zakk Wylde, Santana etc etc, do they do the same? If they're say using a tubescreamer, do they still plug into the overdrive channel?

there are some of us here who are pedal-free- i'm one of them. i prefer the amp's drive as oppossed to pedals.

PROs often use drive pedals (mild variety) to boost their amp's drive. i do that occassionally.

for me, its 50% drive channel, 50% clean.

Clean channel is easier to tweak. To get that tight metal tone is clean channel is easy!!!

Drive channel is where all the magic is. When use with my 3 drive pedals & if TWEAKED to the sweet spot, its orgasm time!!!!!!!

he he- i think you are my opposite number bro, i find it very difficult to achieve my tonal intentions with pedals in the line up. not saying i shun all pedals, i do utilize them when plugging into smaller/ lower wattage amps...

i'm usually on 100% clean lest the amp drive is really what im looking for.

i'd definitely use the amp's drive if i got a footswitch though. definitely.

haha mark bro, same here! my amp's dist is too trebly, usually boost is up with another dirt pedal..

usually they have a huge giantic MIDI switching system to handle their sounds.


Think of it as a multi-fx patch consisting of "single pedals and / or amps heads and /or cabs"


with the stomp of a "patch" they can switch their amps, cabs, fx all at the same time. just in case your wondering, its probably some kinda relay system, yes its true bypass.

Does Santana use dumbles? Zakk Wyld and his full tube marshalls?

A pedal into a solid state practice amp can sound way better than the amp's built in drive channel.

I prefer my amp's (6505) overdrive. All that tube warmth and dynamics and sustain.

But of course, a tubescreamer in front to tighten up teh tone.

If I could afford to buy amps every other day AND get to play them at a nice LOUD volume... sure. Amps.

But I can't.

If I could go perform at every gig with my amp... the organisers are okay with it, I got my own transport and I can manage to do the entire setup + take-down my self. Sure. Amps.

But I can't.

If I could sit down and record my music... going mic-ed up and changing amps for tone flavours... and I have no other job... Sure. Amps.

But I can't.



For me, its a matter of circumstance. I can't afford. I can't çrank. I can't carry. I can't transport. I can't etc etc etc.

But... I got me a good nice little amp for me to run my pedals into. Hey. I'm happy.
