Do NOT use "Mrs Koo" - you have been warned!

Dear all,

I haven't checked SOFT in a long time, however only recently, through meeting a few friends and acquaintances at my piano technician's piano shop, I have taken on a student who claims she has been cheated by a Maxine Koo late 2010, and up to the point of meeting me, stopped pursuing her grade 8 theory and practical due to a lack of trust in private teachers and a lack of comprehensiveness in music schools.

I'm very disturbed at whatever has been, and is still being done by this Mrs Koo person since I last followed this thread in 2009, and it's even more disturbing that her reach of scamming the crowd has enlarged SO MUCH SO that I have come into contact, personally with one of her ex-students. This student has filed a report but follow up on the case is very much unknown as far as the authorities are concerned. Any news?

Several police reports have been made, but I wonder if the police is still sleeping on the case? Wong Kan Seng already left, so the police has no reason to classify everything under "non-sizeable offence" anymore.

:)

hmm...cabinet reshuffle ah...I see no diff..the key positions are still filled multiple times by the same people with the same mentality. Only time will tell...

And the most alarming one...the Acting Minister for Communications and the Arts is a MAJOR GENERAL from the SAF?????????

re: Mrs Koo

I am astonished by the acts of the above teacher, and I may dismayed that the police had not set an example in regards to the whole private music industry, as I believe that the doings by her will render the private music arena into much disarray, as parents will be wary in regards to teachers who are teaching privately.

There is a need to obtain to check the NRIC of the teacher and its certification before the start of a new lesson, however I believe that parents shouldn’t lose faith in the private teaching arena, as most private teachers strike out on their own due to not only timing flexibility, but also flexibility in their teaching methodology as they adapt different teaching styles for different students.

I am able to speak as a part of the arena as I am also currently teaching music in a private capacity, and I believe that everything about music ties in with what the students are learning in life, eg. Being good in math help to improve their counting of intervals etc.

Theory and scales are boring to many students, but I believe that these are studies that help to support the ultimate goal of music performance.

Things that are learnt in theory such as 4 bar phrasing helps them to understand the manner in songs are created, chord progressions are essential for all songs and etc.
Helping them to understand that scales is not boring, but it is a fundamental tool for them to improve their finger movements and strength, thus enabling them to play harder songs.

Thus, I believe that the experience of learning music can be applied to their daily life.

Cheers,
Paris

I'm surprised that after the whole saga over the last two years and after much 'sincere' apologies from her she is still back with her scam. Hopefully parents and students don't lose their hard earned cash to such scams. Seems like a leopard never change its spots

Just Imagine – if Mrs Khoo was charge in Court ( I mean IF) ..they probably dig everything up here at SOFT …. And many will be called up --- I really wonder – How many Charges Will There There Be Against Her …

Hmmm – look at the Piles and Piles of Pages and Complains here … Scary har?

Publish this – at FrontPage / Headlines of Straits Times – and Soft Music Forum … Viewership shoot up like nobody business –

Make us SOFT … Famous overnight …

BUT that is – if someone were to take her up lah to COURT…kekekekke

going around with a different name & email address

dear all,

i had engaged a piano teacher and realised she, 'yoke chai' and 'teng daiwan' is the same person. she used a different email address 'trebleclef@hotmail.sg' and name so it didn't occur to me that she was the person mentioned in this thread, which i had read much earlier. She delayed my first lesson by a day cos of a last min family outing (i gave her the benefit of doubt). Then after coming to teach and taking the money for 4 lessons, she postponed my 2nd lesson a few times, SMS-ing late at night or just 1 hr before to cancel. its really annoying to receive an sms at 8AM to cancel a 9AM lesson, especially since she already confirmed the day before that the lesson will still be held.

thanks to one of the forum users here who spoke with me, i was able to find out they were the same person. i thought she might have changed, but in the end i gave up on giving her another chance, cos she just wasn't responsible at all towards me as a student.

fortunately, i managed to get my money back after a month of endless SMS-ing here and there. she takes so long to return a small sum, with many excuses, first, she has to wait for other students to pay her, then later is husband out of work, she hurt her leg, dad sick, in the end, she also sick. i just tuned out on the excuses after a while.

it was the first time i engaged a teacher. now i've learnt my lesson, never to pay upfront again.

fyi, she is still advertising for students.

This is sad...maybe she really got family problem, but then again, she should not resort to using such method. Not only does it give music teachers a bad name or musicians a bad name but it always causes the whole "lets not hire private teacher" panic...

i haven't been active at SOFT for a long time. i'm surprised that this thread is still ongoing.

Yeahhhhh --- It means 2 Things - Good thing Mrs Khoo is still ALIVEeeeeee , Bad Thing - Seems like - NEVER CHANGED ? whahahahahhaha !

Eric

But I wonder how long can this continue and if the authority will actually take any action against her?

On one hand, you cannot say it is a fraud. Because she really did return the money.

But in some unfortunate cases, she doesn't.

Sooo...how are the police going to settle this if they are gonna to 'chap ji ka'?

Hi all,
I think she is on the loose again.
I encountered similar.
May i know is she quite a fat lady? Staying at Jurong West?

I was so surprised when I saw this email about a new reply. This thread is now more than 5 years old and you revived it!

Fat, and she has a deep scar on her neck. She wore loose T-shirt and shorts to teach, and she looked very unprofessional.

She is one of those who killed my interest in music.
Five years ago I got duped by her, and lost interest. For better or not I don't know...but I am now pursuing my masters' degree now.

Hi thx for replying.
Yes big size lady. I am not sure about the scar as I only had 1 lesson but she asked for 4 lessons fee . The 2nd lesson has been postponed a couple of times.
So it prompted me to to a research esp with her qualifications. She goes the name of Catherine Koo now. 8716 3156
She is still posting adverts in gumtree.

After reading up, it all seems to fit the description.

What happened to the case previously? Any actions taken against her by the police?
