Hi fellow softies. I need some infomation from you guys who are from DMAT (Digital Music and Audio Tech) from SP. As you know, DMAT requires not the normal laptop but the mac's laptop which the school offers, and the cheapest offer for these kind of laptops is 2.++k. This fren of mine, gt into DMAT but he has nt enough money for the laptop, so can anyone from DMAT tell me if the laptop is really neccesary? Is it possible to carry on with the lessons as per normal without the laptop's which are specified or even without a laptop?
Thx alot.

SP over-exagerate everything 1 lar, worst come to worst, juz get e HP lappy, re-format and go and *ahem* get e dual boot software from *ahem* certain *ahem* sources =)

but downside is that you gotta spend abt 2-4 hours manually installing the "required" software in sch

btw i noe SP, i'm a retainee, got long-service award already, haha, i freakin dislike mi sch

i'm enrolling into SP's dmat as well, and am currently also racking up the funds for the laptop.

i do believe SP has a financial assistance scheme regarding an interest-free loan, so your friend could check out the criteria for eligibility. it's on sp's website. there are also laptop loan facilities, but i doubt dmat students are eligible for that.

lol bullshit. actually, all i've got is a Fujitsu laptop. back then, it was compulsory for DMAT people to get laptops... but now i guess it is. you don't do much with your laptop actually. well, if you're planning to do work at home then yeah, probably you should. then again, you just need a normal Windows laptop/computer and download the programs. but of course, Mac is made for art/design/media stuff. oh well, it's completely up to you. hahahha cause i don't bring school work home. unless it's e-learning or a report i've gotta finish. otherwise, everything's done in school.

and Jeremy... HAHAH i think both of us get membership already. power! \m/

I think it has something to do with them only having license to install those DMAT specific programs onto Macs and not Windows?

Haha... Hey ruixist, show me your right click!! =P

good for them that now they pre-install the damn programs into the Mac laptops (i think they're doing that right?). now, they can do everything at home and not fight for so much studio time. bleah... too bad i was in the pioneer batch. lovelovelovelovelovelovelovelove guinea pigs.

im not sure bout this year but during my batch (the last 2) it wasnt compulsory to buy the laptop.

i actually think u should buy a mac from sch if u can afford it so u can do your projects at home while ur other classmates fight for the macs in school and complain that your file missing, not enough time and all that stuff. the macs are usually for your audio editing and midi & synthesis module, but actually if u have a strong enough PC or windows laptop at home, it'll be just fine. just need to dig out the necessary softwares.

yeah i think that was the rationale behind getting the mac, because the person who gave us the briefing mentioned better convenience work-wise, since the editing labs are shared by a few other courses. i bought the mac for 1.8k from the school. to me, it sounds like a bloody good deal.

wolfie, stop teasing me about the rightclick!

Okok, we'll drop the right click issue..

About the macs, yesterday I was doing some illegal surfing from work again and I just realised that FireWire is an apple technology. Its way better than USB but its not that mainstream, so I'm guessing macbooks are a few laptops what have FireWire interface, which is a very much used interface for video/audio streaming. Very relavant to the course to me. I'd say this is one of the main reasons why a mac, apart from the many other reasons.

Now back to the right click. Say, how do people play DotA or CS (or any other game) on a Mac? What if I want to go into scope mode, put on my silencer, lob a gun grenade, or move my DotA character? Hmmm...

sometimes i see students nowadays require laptop is bullshit,i fix computers freelance and all i see is porn, blog, games and bookmarks to social stuff like myspace etc. only a handful non-students are the ones who know how to cherish and spend stuff on line6kb37/firepod bundled with softwares and fully utilise what the laptop is really capable of.
